THE STORY
With 3 of our bands playing Toronto in one week, (CKY at the Opera House, Solitary Sun as part of NXNE and the Cancer Bats on Edgefest) Adam and I thought it was worth the trip. I posted up a Twitter asking for suggestions on a burger and it came back that the spot to try was Dangerous Dan’s Diner. As luck would have it, DDD’s is right across the street from The Opera House so the CKY guys and I headed over for a burger.
Dangerous Dan’s Diner is certainly filled with eye candy and created by a man who certainly loves his beef. Two quotes adorn the walls of this divey short order greasy spoon:
“Vegetarian is the native word for bad hunter” and “If God hadn’t intended for us to eat cows, he wouldn’t have made them so easy to catch.” Hanging cows in nooses, bovine skulls and seats taken from what I can only assume is a graveyard of dead vans, give this place a unique charm. The menu proudly displays a tag line from a CITY TV review “Probably the Most Unhealthy Restaurant in Canada.” Upon further examination, certain menu items are proceeded by a cannabis leaf and the follow description: “
Recommended for Medicinal Cannabis Users” In other words, this place is all about the munchies.
THE BURGER
Although the pressure was on to order the “Quadruple C Collosal Colon Clogger Combo” – a 24oz burger served with a quarter pound of cheese, a quarter pound of bacon, and 2 fried eggs. Also comes with a large shake (flavor of your choice) and a small poutine, I just couldn’t do it knowing I had to stand around a loud rock show all night. Certainly a worthy challenge though! Instead I opted for the “Big Cheese” with feta, mozzarella, cheddar and blue cheese along with garlic dressing and onions and of course a side of poutine (french fries with gravy and cheese curds.) Matt Deis ordered the same while Jess went with a standard cheese burger. Our drum tech Carl, opted for the DeNiro chicken sandwich.
I asked to have mine cooked medium rare but the cook informed me that the local law says they can only serve them well done. I wasn’t going to let that bring down my excitement. The bun was bland and didnt hold up very well. The garlic dressing, which was a little sweeter than I expected, over powered the beef and all the cheese. In fact, I can only remember tasting it and the patty. The burger itself was good beef but certainly didn’t blow me out of my seat although that could be argued when I had to “see a man about a horse” only 30 minutes after the meal. The poutine on the other hand, quite deelish although the fries could’ve been crispier.
DDD’s rated high on fun and presentation and hit right down the middle on the actual burger.
