THE STORY
Jackie and I were in South Jersey for a meeting with our great friends at Ferret Music. Although I wish we got paid to eat burgers, we do have “day jobs” where we manage Ferret Recording artists Poison The Well and Shadows Fall, among others. After our meeting, head Ferreter, Carl, retail marketing guru Tim and graphic designer extraordinaire, Portland from Sons of Nero, suggested we get lunch. Ferret’s office is kind of in the middle of nowhere but Carl demanded we try their fave lunch spot, the Salt Creek Grille. Although a I was hesitant about the quality of food in a chain restaurant, I was starving and didn’t really care.

The Salt Creek Grille is a much fancier looking restaurant than we are normally used to eating burgers in but that never stopped us before. Although I wasn’t prepared for a Burger Conquest, when I saw this on the menu, I went back to the car and got my camera:

“10 oz Kobe Burger, Humboldt fog cheese, garlic butter, arugula, red onion, tomato & mayo on King’s sweet Hawaiian bun.”

THE BURGER
We started off the meal with an appetizer of “Creek Sliders” which are topped with blue cheese ailoli and arugula sandwiched between King’s sweet Hawaiian buns. Why order burgers before burgers? Because if it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing! Kudos to Salt Creek for carrying my favorite beer, Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat and even bigger kudos for serving it with a frosty glass. The sliders were good and savory but had an odd, held to close to the flames taste that kind of put me off. Nothing a 2nd Leinie couldn’t wash down!

Then the Kobe burger arrived. 10 ounces my ass! It looked big enough to have a tug boat! The Humboldt fog cheese and garlic butter was just a big lump right in the center and after I carefully spread it around the burger, I chomped down on my first bite. At first I was leery of a sweet bun but when mixed with the bitter arugula, the savory garlic butter and the dense cheese, they made for a perfect combination lock around an awesome burger. It was piping hot and although slightly over cooked, it’s flavor packed a punch like Swayze in Road House! This is one chain, I would let into Manhattan but only if they kept their Kobe Burger priced so cheap at $19!!!.

I gotta have this burger again!

8 out 10 ounces

The only thing I ever liked about working in New Jersey (besides seeing the lovely faces of my Ferret/ChannelZero co-workers) was going to Salt Creek. Great burgers, great sliders, great everything.

Great times for sure! The ambiance is what really sells that restaurant. Though, the next time you're in the area check out their sister restaurant the Witherspoon Grill in downtown Princeton. Ate there for the first time today, GREAT burger: The Witherspoon Burger
10 oz Angus Prime with fries
    cheese, mushrooms, bacon, onions
