Birdsall House – Burgers and Beers With The Father of Our Country

Birdsall House
http://www.birdsallhouse.net
970 Main Street
Peekskill, NY 10566

THE CONQUEST
New York is known as a destination dining town. That means people travel to the city to eat it’s food and it’s residents have no qualms when it comes to traveling outside of their neighborhood to get something to eat. If you live on the upper east side and someone told you about an awesome Burger in the East Village, you wouldn’t hesitate to head down there and eat it. Truth is, we are obsessed with Food here and moreover, good dining. Even with 25,000 dining options inside our 5 boroughs, we’ll never get tired of trying new things. That’s the beauty of eating in NYC.

But let’s not forget, there’s great dining available outside our walls. Don’t forget, the Food we eat isn’t grown here so chances are, dinning in other parts can get us closer to fresher Foods. At the end of the day, that’s what we want right? The freshest, tastiest, best prepared Eats right?

If you’re willing to get on subway to check out that new farm to table spot across town, then consider a quick train ride upstate to Peekskill, NY. After a short 56 minute ride from Grand Central you’ll arrive in a town that not only boasts the single oldest continually active Abraham Lincoln Society in the United States, the birthplace of Stanley Tucci and Paul “Pee-Wee Herman” Reubens but was also the original “West Point” when it served as the base camp for then General, George Washington’s Continental Army. While there President Washington gave orders to sign West Point over to Benedict Arnold. Centuries later, that location still stands, marked by a monument and while visiting it you can toast Honest Abe & the Father of our Country with a locally made & tasty Craft Beer.

The Birdsall House now stands directly across from that monument serving locally sourced Foods and American Craft Beers with a focus on brews made in New York State. In the 1920s the building served as one of the very first A&P Grocery Stores until 1935 when it became Connolly’s Bar and Grill. It stayed in the family until 2007 when they decided to lease it and John Sharp and Tim Reinke stepped into the picture. For you Manhattanites, the two of them have a part in the Craft Beer focused, Blind Tiger Ale House. The 30 foot mahogany bar from Connolly’s still stands as does the old school phone booth located at the end but now it has 20 beer taps. Along with that comes a seasonal menu oriented around locally sourced eats, including meats from Hudson Valley farm, Hemlock Hill. Diners, young and old, gather around the bar or sit in the old school booths enjoying a selection of interesting Meats, Cheeses, Salads, Snacks, Sandwiches and of course, the one item everyone raves about, the Hamburger.

THE BURGER
My wife, her Mother Evelyn and I were looking for a big, comforting warm meal the day after Thanksgiving. Evelyn suggested the Birdsall House, which I’ve been curious to check out for sometime. We were sat immediately and my mouth started to water as I looked over the Beer and Food Menu. Sharing and tasting is a big part of how we like to dine which of course means appetizers. We started with the Sweet Potato Mac-n-Cheese which is served with Crispy Bacon, Baby Argula & Sage Oil. The Bacon is as crispy and smoky as the Greens are fresh. I grew up eating Stouffer’s Mac-n-Cheese and now I know where to get a fresh and delicious version of it … with Sweet Potatoes! We also ordered a selection of the house-made Charcuterie including the subtle and slightly sweet Pork and Barleywine Sausage, the creamy & smoky Chicken Liver Pate (a must eat!), the Spicy Lamb Sausage and briney yet sweet Ommegang Brewery Tilson Cheese.

The Birdsall House Burger is served with Carrot Pickles, Caramelized Onions & Mesclun Greens on a Organic Challah Bun. The Patty is sourced from Hemlock Hill farms whose cows are all hormone and antibiotic free. They’re pasture raised & fed on grains, including spent grains from the beer making process at Captain Lawrence Brewing Company. The Burger is a big, thick pub style Burger, probably not unlike what was found at Connolly’s back in the day. Natural Beef taste is going to be what you taste when you bite into this juicy Patty. The Onions and Greens are a must to place on the Burger, however, the incredibly delicious Pickled Carrots should not. They are so good on their own but when added a top the Burger, they actually mask the great Beefiness. Birdsall makes their own Ketchup that has strong hints of Worcestershire Sauce and Vinegar as well as a sweet, whole grain Mustard that when combined with the Ketchup, create a sweet, smoky BBQ like sauce totally worth dipping the skin on Fries into.

Whether you’re looking for a delicious, locally sourced Meal, some tasty pints of Craft Beer or an experience hundreds of years in the making, the Birdsall House is the place for you … regardless if you have to take an hour long train to get there or just live in the neighborhood.

Chicago Food Film Fest – Taste What’s Behind The Screen

2012 Chicago Food Film Festival
http://thefoodfilmfestival.com
Kendall College
900 N North Branch Street
Chicago, IL 60642

THE CONQUEST

The NYC Food Film Festival (Oct. 17-‐21, 2012) and The Chicago Food Film Festival (Nov. 15-‐17, 2012) are the only festivals in the world where guests get to Taste What They See on the Screen…sometimes right in their seats! Hosted by Travel Channel host George Motz, the documentary filmmaker behind the award-‐winning “Hamburger America” film, book, and mobile app, the Festival presents the best, and the most memorable, of the world’s favorite and exotic foods on the big screen…and then serves them to the guests.

I’ve been privileged to attend Chicago twice now and NYC three times but moreover, I’ve been incredibly blessed to actually be a part of the staff. 3 years ago I attended the Brooklyn Burger n’ Beer Garden at the NYC Food Film Festival and I was instantly hooked. You watch movies on a screen and right at the instant where you’re thinking “I wonder what that tastes like,” they hand you that food item. Hence their motto “Taste What You See On The Screen.” There is nothing like it and soon after the festival, I begged to be a part of it. I’m now on the executive staff of the festival where I over see marketing, partnerships and my favorite part, Beer.

As a Food Blogger, it’s my natural desire to scribe historically on this site about the Food we ate and the event itself. I certainly took more than enough pictures to give you a good idea of what Food was served & eaten as well as a recap of the films, guests and fun. As I sat down to do it after looking at the great slide show on Serious Eats Chicago, the fantastic review including details on the exclusive Midnight Ramen event at El Ideas on Zagat or the entertaining write up on Verbicide about our Whisky Night, I had another thought.

Maybe you read all of those. Maybe you were at the Festival. Maybe you have already scrolled through the dozens & dozens of gorgeous photos on the Food Film Festival Facebook page. I know I have. So instead, I am going to give you an inside look. I am going to take you on a journey of what happens behind the curtain of the most unique Food event on the planet. But instead of showing you pictures like this:

I am going to show you what the staff of the Food Film Festival ate when we weren’t serving you all the tasty Foods from the Films (which we ate too!) We’re Food fanatics just like you and even though we worked for long hours every day to bring the Festival to you, we still found the time to eat at some of our favorite local Chicago Eateries. So with that I give you …

Chicago Food Film Fest – Taste What’s Behind The Screen
What the Festival staff eats when they’re aren’t serving Festival guests!

The Wieners Circle
http://www.wienercircle.net
2622 N Clark St
Chicago, IL 60614

Chicago is a Hot Dog city for sure. Some would say there is nothing like a Chicago Dog with all it’s crazy toppings. I’m not one of them because I don’t like a Dog with more than Mustard unless it’s a proper Detroit-style Coney Dog. But man, Chicagoans love their Dogs! While there’s many places to get them, which will raise heated arguments over which is the best, I think there’s none finer than the Wieners Circle. If you’ve never been, be sure to order the Chocolate Shake.

Old Jerusalem
http://oldjerusalemchicago.com
1411 North Wells Street
Chicago, IL 60610

The night before the fest the entire staff goes out for a meal together. One of the favorites is Old Jerusalem. Located in Old Town Chicago, you will be hard pressed to find something more authentic than this Middle Eastern restaurant. It’s fresh, delicious, flawlessly made food done the old way. They don’t serve alcohol so you are welcome to BYO and be sure to ask for the off-menu Lamb Kibbeh. Whoa.

Al’s Italian Beef
http://www.alsbeef.com
Multiple locations

In Philly they eat Cheesesteaks but in Chicago, they eat Italian Beef Sandwiches. While there’s several places that serve them, no one does it like Al’s. They’ve been serving these tasty Sandos since 1938 that have since been called one of the “Top 10 Sandwiches in America.” It’s a long roll covered in thinly sliced Beef that’s been marinating for a long time. The sandwich is then covered in the juice and should be ordered with Giardiniera a pepper based Relish. If the pictures below don’t get you craving one, the story behind Al’s will most certainly do the trick.

Billy Goat Tavern, Original
http://www.billygoattavern.com
Near Tribune Towers and Wrigley Building
430 N. Michigan Ave at Lower Level
Chicago, IL 60611

While it’s not my favorite Burger, The Billy Goat Tavern certainly has earned it’s place in the Burger time line. Made famous by that “Cheezborger” skit we’ve all seen from Saturday Night Live, the Billy Goat is a really fun place for a late night Beer and a Snack. The Burger is served on my least favorite roll of all times, the way too thick and dry Kaiser Roll. The Patties are thin and overcooked. The Cheese, well it’s just a regular old slice of American. But, when you add Grilled Ham, Bacon and Egg, Extra Cheese and a 2nd Patty, well that my friends is how you achieve Food Porn. Just ask Chef Will Shear.

Top Notch Beefburgers
http://www.yelp.com/biz/top-notch-beef-burgers-chicago
2116 West 95th Street
Chicago, IL 60643

Top Notch is a good 45 minute drive from Kendall College where the Food Film Festival is held and going there was worth every moment of stress it caused in our day to take 3 hours to go there. This is not only one of the best Burgers in Chicago, it is one of the best in America. It’s a true American classic that’s been in business for 70 years serving fresh, never frozen, house-ground Beefburgers.

The Top Notch Beefburger is so good that your your first thought after just one bite will be “I’m going to need a second one of these.”

Read my full review of Top Notch Beefburgers here.

Goddess and Grocer
http://www.goddessandgrocer.com
Multiple locations

A hearty Breakfast is a key component to a long, activity filled day. With all we have to do, we really don’t get time to sit around and have one. Enter Goddess and Grocer. The best way I can describe one of these is a localized version of a Starbucks. In Chicago that means Intelligentsia Coffee, some of the best I have ever had. They also have fresh made food which is mostly made up of Sandwiches. Their Croissant Sandwich with Fluffy Scrambeled Eggs, Prosciutto, Fresh Mozzarella and Basil sans Tomatoes but with a little Sriracha is a great kick start to the day.

Tempo Cafe
http://www.yelp.com/biz/tempo-cafe-chicago
6 East Chestnut Street
Chicago, IL 60611

When you’re tired, overworked and most likely a little hungover from an 18 hour day filled with Avocado Dishes, Single Malt Whisky & Midnight Ramen, a big, hot & fresh Breakfast is exactly what what the Burger Doctor (who in the case is George Motz.) For that, try one of the most well known Breakfast jams in Chi-Town-Bang-Bang, the Tempo Cafe. While we were at Kendall College packing and cleaning, George arrived with an array of Omelets, Pancakes, Waffles, Breakfast Meats, Potatoes and Toast. Combine that with leftover Food Film Festival goods like Jarlsberg Cheese Dip, Avocados from Mexico, Bobtail Ice Cream, Pepper Relish from Bushel & Pecks and you have a backstage flavor feast like none other.

Twisted Spoke
http://twistedspoke.com
501 North Ogden Avenue
Chicago, IL 60642

I love Bourbon, Beer, Burgers, Hot Wings and Rock and Roll and that’s pretty much defines the bar I own in NYC, Idle Hands Bar. When I am in other cities, I look for similar spots and in Chicago that spot is the Twisted Spoke. As you’re driving down Ogden Ave, look for the rotating Skeleton on a Motorcycle atop the restaurant, you can’t miss it. Nicole and I popped in real quick for a bite and an eat to hold us over until the El Ideas Chicago VIP dinner. While you’re there take a moment to choose from a huge array of carefully selected Whiskies, Bourbon, Scotch and Craft Beers and don’t miss out on a house specialty, Flaming Lemon Wings. If you’ve ever had Greek Saganaki Cheese, it’s served table side while on fire. You blow it out and eat it. The Twisted Spoke Flaming Lemon Wings are marinated in lemons, chilis and garlic, olive oil, onion, parsley, parsley & grilled pita and then set on fire, just like the Cheese.

DMK Burger Bar
http://dmkburgerbar.com
2954 North Sheffield Avenue
Chicago, IL 60657

The best thing to do while eating Burgers is do it with friends. The next best thing to do is eat them with Craft Beers. If you’re looking for a great Craft Beer & Burger experience that is also a cool spot to hang out, try the DMK Burger Bar. While you could certainly order a plain old Cheeseburger here, that’s not the reason for the seasoning. DMK has an incredibly robust list of toppings and preparations which spans not only their Burger menu but also their Salads, Apps, Mac N Cheese and Milkshake selections. If you are into boring standards, a trip to DMK may require you to wear a helmet and seat belt.

It was a full on, 5 day blast of Food, Films and Fun and I can’t wait to do it again next year!

To see more of my photos including back stage prep, Food served, Beers and pictures from both the Midnight Ramen & VIP Dinner at EL Ideas, please visit the Burger Conquest Facebook Photo page. You can also find some fun photos on Keizo Shimamoto’s Go Ramen Blog.

Top Notch Beefburgers – Do Not Refuse To Eat This Classic

Top Notch Beefburgers
http://www.yelp.com/biz/top-notch-beef-burgers-chicago
2116 West 95th Street
Chicago, IL 60643

THE CONQUEST
You’ve probably not heard much about Top Notch Beefburger because it isn’t owned by some Chef made famous by 23 minutes of TV time or because it’s located on an stretch of urban thoroughfare next to some glitzy hotel or a shopping center boasting all the latest of fashion & technologies. In fact, it’s just the opposite. It’s in a section of South Chicago called Beverly which is close to just about nothing you’ve heard about on TV. The brown paneling and leather booth seats are stereotypically what one would expect in just such an establishment.  For 70 years, Top Notch has been serving fresh, never frozen Burgers that they grind themselves in house. It’s the kind of old school, luncheonette / diner that hungry Americans grew up eating.  Whomever convinced Swedish punk band Refused that the Classics go out of style never at ate Top Notch Beefburger.

While recently in Chicago for the 2012 edition of the Food Film Festival, I had a chance to check out Top Notch. Festival curator and Burger lover George Motz grabbed a couple of us, including his son, for a pilgrimage to eat a Burger 7 decades in the making. George is my number one source for Burgers, especially the classics and one of my fave people to Burger Conquest with. When George says “you’ve gotta eat this Burger,” you should.

THE BURGER
The patty from Top Notch Beefburger is made from house ground, U.S. Choice Ground Round Steaks. It’s a hearty-beefy-juicy-savory burst of Burger that you won’t soon forget. You can order them 1/4 LB or 1/2 LB but it’s suggest that you get the latter? Why? Perfect Bun to Patty ratio. The bun, speaking of, is a Toasted White Squishy Bun with Sesame Seeds, which just adds more of that classic American Burger appeal. Order it with cooked Onions and if you are like George or me, you’ll discard the Lettuce, Tomatoes & Mayo. The Beef, Toasted Bun, Onions and Cheese are all you need to reach a Burger Touchdown.

Let’s not forget about the Burger’s buddy, the Fries. If you are a classic Fry lover, buckle up for a big win. Top Notch uses fresh cut fries that are also never frozen. They are long, crispy, golden and delicious.

The Top Notch Beefburger is so good that your your first thought after just one bite will be “I’m going to need a second one of these.”

Take my words as serious, you need to eat this Burger. When you’re there, be sure to look up at the photos above the kitchen window to see these 5 smiling mugs:

BGR The Burger Joint – How To Spell Passion in Greek

BGR The Burger Joint
http://www.bgrtheburgerjoint.com
4827 Fairmont Avenue
Bethesda, MD 20814

THE CONQUEST
Some people start a business to make money and others do so following a passion for sharing something they love. The successful businessman does both. Without passion no amount of business schooling will make you successful. Such is the story of Mark Bucher, founder of BGR the Burger Joint. Mark grew up Philly where every Sunday his neighborhood assembled for what could be best described as a block party. Each week a local butcher would cook up fresh ground Burgers for which people would line up to eat. Thus was born Mark’s flame-grilled Burger obsession.

How else do you create a fast-casual restaurant that uses local Produce & Buns, fresh, dry-aged custom blended Meat cooked over an open flame  and then grows quickly into 20+ locations? Passion. That’s it my friends, passion. When you love a Burger and I mean truly love a Burger, you want to share it with others. When you’re sharing a Burger why would you ever give someone a frozen or even worse, reheated, limp Patty with flavorless Lettuce, reconstituted Onions or Cheese that had more chemicals than a laboratory? Thankfully Mark’s passion is to create a fresh, never frozen, tasty, delicious Burger that soothes the soul as much as the stomach.

With walls adorned with Rock and Roll memorabilia, a Soda machine with a billion options and a menu full of unique, interesting and award winning Burgers, you’ll instantly know when you walk into a BGR that it’s been created by someone who has passion for life. A passion to serve a Burger made from prime, dry-aged, all natural, hormone free, grain-fed Beef.

THE BURGER
The fast food and fast casual business is a tricky one. As if there wasn’t already a cajillion options out there, doing things the right way, fresh and local, is like creating a beautiful headache. Frozen, per-prepared & laboratory “perfected” Food is easy, it’s cheap and it’s everywhere. Most people don’t care but for those that do, there is no other way. When I walked in for my first trip to BGR and immediately saw album art from The Who’s “Who Are You,” Dogfish Head Beer on Draft and a Lamb Burger on the menu, I knew I had arrived somewhere I was going to end up happy.

While I was tempted to make my way around one of these secret recipe dry aged Burgers, it’s tough to say no to a chain restaurant that’s serving a fresh Lamb Burger. It’s almost like spotting a Yeti, It does seem possible to exist but has anyone actually every really seen one? If reading the description of “The Greek” on the BGR menu “Featured on Food Network’s “Throwdown with Bobby Flay.” Yes, it won! Fresh ground leg of Lamb, seasoned with Cumin, Mint and Garlic. Topped with Tzatziki Sauce and Feta Cheese. Served on a fresh, buttery-toasted Brioche Bun, ” doesn’t make you hungry, perhaps you are reading the wrong blog.

The Lamb Patty is well formed yet loosely packed and created with just the right amount of spices to as to accent the natural flavors of the meat and never ever get in it’s way. Lamb is funny that way. It almost begs you to add spices to it and most overwork it, adding to much and therefore masking the Meat. BGR’s “The Greek” has just the right balance so you can taste all party. The Feta is creamy, the Lettuce is green and fresh and the Bun is study and just a little sweet. It also comes with Cucumbers and Tomatoes, which I am sure were equally as good but not something I like on my Burgers.

“The Greek” Lamb Burger at BGR the Burger Joint is so good that it gives me hope that more Chefs will be inspired to add Lamb Burgers on menus across the country.

Thunder Burger & Bar – You Don’t Have To Eat A Burger, But You Will

Thunder Burger & Bar
http://www.thunderburger.com
3056 M Street, NW
Washington, DC 20007

THE COUNTQUEST
I love Pizza, Tacos, Curry, BBQ, Thai, Italian, Salads and all other kinds of Food. In fact, other than Seafood, I like a whole lot of different Food items and ethnic cuisines. One of my favorite things about traveling is trying local eats. But when you write a blog about Burgers, people have a tendency to think that’s all you eat and when you come into town, that’s all they want to suggest to you. On one hand, that’s the beauty of Burgers, if there isn’t one in your town that you don’t think is the best, well, you probably don’t like Burgers at all.

While recently on an overnight trip to our Nation’s capitol I reached out to my good pal Mike to meet up for a drink and he suggested we meet up at a Burger spot. When I told him “no Burger needed, just Beers. Your town, you pick” he replied “it has beers. Don’t let the name fool you – you don’t HAVE to eat.” While Mike is certainly right, he doesn’t know me that well … or maybe he does. I had to eat the Burger.

Nestled up along the Potomac River in Washington DC, the Georgetown neighborhood is filled with homes, shops, the Washington Harbor, a little university by the same name and a super kick-ass restaurant called the Thunder Burger & Bar. It’s a kick-asss Rock-n-Roll den filled with cool taps of Beer, high leaether back seats, gothic decorations and a menu boasting 15 different gourmet Burgers. The patty’s of which are 8 ounces and made from a premium all-natural, free-range that’s freshly ground.  They’re served in between a toasted Sesame Seed Challah Bun and accompanied by a list of toppings so long you’ll need a pen and paper and possibly a coin to flip to decide which to choose. Take a quick breath before diving into this:

Tomato, Charred Jalapeno & Poblano Peppers, Raw Red Onion, Grilled Red Onion, Sautéed Mushrooms, Roasted Red Peppers, Caramelized Red Onion Relish, Thousand Island, Ancho Mayo, Wasabi Mayo, Remoulade Sauce, Ginger Aioli, Mustard, Ketchup, BBQ & Ranch, Gorgonzola Blue Cheese, Pepper Jack, American, Swiss, Sharp Cheddar, Tobacco Onions, Thunder Beef Chili, Home Made Pico De Gallo, House Pineapple Salsa, Havarti, Tillamook Aged White Cheddar, Belle Etoile Triple Cream Brie, Applewood Smoked Bacon, Guacamole, Avocado, BBQ Pulled Pork, Fried Egg & Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras.

Head hurt yet? Ask the bartender for a pen and grab a couple napkins…

THE BURGER
First of all, for a Rock and Roll bar fir for a Viking, I’m not sure who was DJing or which iPod playlist was on but it certainly did not fit the motif. I can only best describe the style of music being pumped into the bar on this Monday night as “ambient dub step played at half-speed.” Thankfully my company was so good that I was able to tune it out.

As for the meal, let’s start with the sauce, yes the sauce. Each Burger comes with a house made Remoulade that is so good, that it’s worth ordering French Fries alone just to eat it. In fact, all of the Sauces are fantastic and worth ordering. The Seasoned Fries are hot and fresh like a French Fry should be but taste more like a fresh made Potato Chip.

As if the toppings conundrum wasn’t already enough to tip you off, these Burgers are not for the weakly constituted. They may arrive looking gorgeous but between size, condiments and preparation, the Burgers are …thunderous. The hefty sized patty comes on an equally hefty, yet a little too large Bun. While every Burger comes automatically cooked to a “warm, pink center” mine arrived medium-rare as requested. The Charred Jalapeno & Poblano Peppers are a must for any taste collector out there and could just as easily be served on top of Nachos, Pizza or a number of other items. In fact, as I write this, I am salivating thinking about them. Also worth trying, the Tabacco Onions which were caramelized to be both sweet and a little smoky. Visually, the Burger appears to have a deep char to the outside but flavorwise, it doesn’t overtake the the natural Beefiness of the Patty.

Note: If they have Avery Ale to the Chief on draft, drink it as it’s only made every four years.

You don’t have to be a Viking to appreciate the tasty Burgers at the Thunder Burger & Bar but you might need an army to choose toppings and eat it!

6th Annual NYC Food Film Festival – The Best Tasting Film Festival On The Planet

6th Annual NYC Food Film Festival
http://thefoodfilmfestival.com

The NYC Food Film Festival (Oct. 17-‐21, 2012) and The Chicago Food Film Festival (Nov. 15-‐17, 2012 are the only festivals in the world where guests get to Taste What They See on the Screen…sometimes right in their seats! Hosted by Travel Channel host George Motz, the documentary filmmaker behind the award-‐winning “Hamburger America film, book, and mobile app, the Festival presents the best, and the most memorable, of the world’s favorite and exotic foods on the big screen…and then serves them to the guests.

Unless you’ve attended at Food Film Festival event, you have been missing out on the most unique, delicious, fun and awesome Food event known to man. It’s a very simple concept; “Taste What You Seen On The Screen.” While you’re seated in a movie theater, watching a gratuitous film about Food, you are served that exact Food item. Imagine the power corporations would have if while you were watching their commercial on TV, someone knocked on your door and handed you that exact Food? It would be incredible and they can NOT do it, but the Food Film Festival can!!!!

What’s even better, the Food Film Festival is not feeding people pre-made, frozen, re-heated & processed junk. Everything is fresh and artfully prepared from some of the best local Chefs. Even when the Festival has to ship something in that is not local to where the event is being held, it’s made and then shipped as close to the event date as possible.

And it’s also a Film Festival! Just like all the other ones out there, talented Film Makers around the world submit their beautiful Films to the Festival. Then a committee watches them all, chooses participants and then builds events around them. Both the committee and attendees of the Festival view the films and vote for their favorites. During the event itself, an awards ceremony is held and the winners received trophies, in the form of a giant Silver Spoon.

Trust me, this is the BEST Food event on the planet.

Please take a moment and read this excellent post on Serious Eats. It has a great wrap of the events as well as all the category winners from the Festival Awards Ceremony.

I took a ton of photos, ate a bunch of great Food, served a lot of exellent craft Beer and more than anything else, had an amazing time with my friends, helping to raise money for one of my favorite charity organizations, The Food Bank For New York City, which is the beneficiary of the Festival.

New Yorkers Are The BEST – #BurgerAidNYC

This is the best city on the planet. New Yorkers love New Yorkers and when New Yorkers are in need, New Yorkers respond. I am welling up with tears as I write this to update you on how proud I am to be a part of this incredible city.

Last week, our fine city, as well as many other parts of the Eastern Seaboard, suffered a crushing blow from Super Storm Sandy. It ripped apart land, property, vehicles, families and goods. It struck and it struck hard and then once the storm cleared, New Yorkers jumped into action. Whether you were affected directly or not, it does affect all of us.

On Sunday, a small group of us from The Food Film Festival made a couple phone calls, sent a few emails and before you know it, we had food, money and the means to repair a food truck in our possession. We gathered together along with the Rockaway based Food Truck, The Fisherman’s Dog and restaurant, Rockaway Taco, we served 450 free, fresh, hot Hamburgers to the residents of the Rockaways as well as the workers who are giving it their all to help those affected. We left the Fisherman’s Dog & Rockaway Taco with another 1400 Burgers to continue the effort.

The NYC’s Mayor’s Office helped us to distribute those Burgers to people right in front of their homes. The next morning they called us and asked if they could get us the funding, could we continue the efforts. To make a long story short, our small endeavor ignited a fire. We said yes and now in conjunction with New York Food Truck Association, we have an army of food trucks making runs into effected parts of Brooklyn & Queens to feed people hot and fresh food.

It’s amazing what a few people can accomplish to help those in need & that’s what New Yorkers are good at.

Please help us.

Check out any of the links below for more information on what we have done so far and be sure to follow #BurgerAidNYC on Twitter for the latest details.

MAYOR BLOOMBERG ANNOUNCES NEW HOT FOOD SERVICE AT CITY RELIEF SITES THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL FOOD TRUCKS

1.4 Million Meals and 900K Bottles of Water Already Distributed at City Relief Sites

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced today the Mayor’s Office has partnered with the NYC Food Truck Association, NYC Food Film Festival, and local food trucks to coordinate free hot food distribution at the City’s food, water and blanket distribution centers and disaster assistance service centers, as well as locations in some of the hardest hit areas. Realizing the need for hot meals as the weather drops, in addition to the over 1.4 million ready-made-meals that have been distributed, and the many individuals and groups have already been serving meals in high needs areas, this coordinated effort will provide additional hot meals to those that most need it. The food trucks are being sponsored by the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, which is raising private money in support of hurricane relief efforts.

“With the drop in temperature, hot meals are more necessary than ever,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Working together with food trucks who can provide residents in devastated areas can be a life line for many and we are grateful for this partnership that can help with much needed relief for the most affected New Yorkers.”

The following Food Trucks will be assisting the City of New York with free hot food distribution at sites in areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy from 12-4 PM:

Souvlaki GR, Phil’s Steaks, Rickshaw Truck, Schnitzel & Things, Seoul Food, Valducci’s, Taim Mobile, Toum, Mexico Blvd, Gorilla Cheese, Mike n Willies, Mexicue NYC, Big D’s Grub, Chinese Mirch, Coolhaus, Cupcake Crew, Frites & Meats, Eddies Pizza, Morris Grilled, Now Eat This, Nuchas, and Fisherman’s Dog.

Over the past five days, the City has distributed nearly 1.4 million meals, 900,000 bottles of water, and 55,000 blankets through its food distribution centers and the City’s door to do canvassing operation bringing food, water and supplies to thousands of residents who are unable to come to the distribution sites. In addition, community residents, nonprofits and local businesses, like Rockaway Taco at Rockaway Beach, have also provided invaluable support to their neighbors over the last week.

Burger Aid NYC – Please Help With Hurricane Sandy Relief

#BurgerAidNYC

Today the crew from The Food Film Festival served 450 FREE, hot, fresh Hamburgers to in the Rockaways to locals and relief workers in the area. We left behind another 1400 Burgers with the fantastic gentlemen from the Fisherman’s Dog Food Truck to continue to feed people with. All it took was a couple hours worth of phone calls & emails to set up and a full day of personal service. It was a small effort to try and help out those in need.

Whether you call it a super storm or a hurricane, either way Sandy caused a disaster. There are people all along the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. who lost their homes, cars, personal belongings and for some very unfortunate, family members. National, State & Local Governments are doing all they can to help along with the support of FEMA and other concerned volunteers who want nothing more to help their neighbors.

It’s only been one week and although the power has gone back on in some neighborhoods, water has been pumped out and clean up has begun, their are entire neighborhoods that have been ravaged. While there are still relief efforts happening, it’s not enough and we are far from done helping to rebuild. There are thousands without homes, without power, without food, clothing and heat. It’s getting colder every day which is only going to make relief efforts that much more difficult.

Schools have been turned into shelters for those who have lost their homes but students need to go back to school. In most of these neighborhoods, strict sundown curfews are being implemented. There is looting, fighting and violence that is happening as a result of the post storm conditions. There are cold, hungry, tired people who have lost their entire lives.

It’s very easy to help your community and neighbors to rebuild and escape from the horrors they’ve been dealt.

Make a phone call.
Send an email.
Share some information.
Spend some time.
Donate some money.
Please.

Fisherman’s Dog Food Truck will continue to cook & serve Burgers to the neighborhood as well as operate a 2nd truck as a soup kitchen to help delivery hot, fresh meals to the Rockaways.

Here’s a list of things you can do to help:

VOLUNTEER:

DONATE MONEY:

DONATE BLOOD:
NYC is in desperate need of blood donations. Please schedule an appointment with the New York Blood Center.

DONATE POINTS:
If you have a Delivery.com account, you can donate your Delivery points to City Harvest.

OCCUPY SANDY:
Occupy Sandy is a coordinated relief effort to help distribute resources & volunteers to help neighborhoods and people affected by Hurricane Sandy. We are a coalition of people & organizations who are dedicated to implementing aid and establishing hubs for neighborhood resource distribution.” Click this link to see how & where you can donate and or volunteer.

EAT AND DRINK:
If you live in an area affected by the storm, one of the best things you can do is spending money with locally owned businesses. They are the lifeblood of local economy and need our support to help our communities.

A lot of local bars & restaurants are holding Sandy Relief events, including my bar, Idle Hands. Come by Monday, November 4th where I’ll be bartending and 100% of my tips will be donated to NYC’ Mayor’s Office Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.

Click here to RSVP to the Idle Hands Hurricane Sandy Happy Hour Relief Party

Thank you to Burger Maker for donating 1800 fresh, high-quality and excellent tasting Burgers.
Thank you to Sweet’N Low for helping to fund our efforts.
Thank you to Jarslberg for donating delicious Cheese for the Burgers as well helping to fund our efforts.
Thank you to Fisherman’s Dog Food Truck for letting us use your truck to help feed your neighborhood. Thank you as well for continuing the effort.
Thank you to Rockaway Taco for helping us to feed your neighborhood.
Thank you to the NYC Office of the Mayor for helping us to feed people in the Rockaways.
Shout out to Terence, Jared, George, Seth, Ruby, Nick, Ava, Nicole, Aaron, Will & Cara for doing what you did today. It’s an honor to know you.

Sysco Food Show – Burger Conquest Celebrates Its 4th Burgerthday

Sysco Food Show
Meadowlands Exposition Center
http://mecexpo.com
355 Plaza Drive
Secaucus, NJ 07094

1,424 days ago, specifically, Friday, October 16, 2008, 5 friends went out for a burger at Arthur’s Steakhouse in Hoboken, NJ. On that day, my Glorious Pursuit of Delicious Burgers began. That means today marks Burger Conquest‘s 4th Burgerthday!

THE STATS
1,424 days
534 blog posts
575 Burgers eaten by Rev (105 thus far in 2012)
18 Wing-Offs
7 TV appearances
0 “10 out of 10 ounces”

THE CONQUEST
If you’re doing the math, that’s one Burger every 2.47 days. When I think about what has happened in those 4 years, I am amazed. The people I’ve met, the places I’ve been, the food I’ve eaten have all come together to literally change my life. No joke, 4 years ago today, when I ate a Burger with my friends that was so good, it inspired a blog, I was in the music business running a successful artist management and music marketing company, The Syndicate, with my friends in Weehawken, NJ. I’ve since left that company:

  • started my own marketing and consulting firm in NYC that specializes in the hospitality business and digital marketing: Yeah! Management
  • opened a bar with two of my friends in Manhattan: Idle Hands
  • helped a friend open a restaurant: That Burger
  • launched a merchandise store and blog that sells merchandise with images of butcher cut mythical animals while donating proceeds to charity: Mythical Creature Butcher Shop
  • working as the Director of Brand Partnerships for The Food Film Festival
  • now managing National Restaurant accounts as a sales manager for a company in Atlanta: Cardlytics

There is no doubt in my mind, that a silly blog called BurgerConquest played a massive part in this. 4 years ago I was living my dream in the music business and today I am 100% in the business of food and beverages. That’s crazy to me. In fact, it wasn’t until this very day that I actually stopped to think about how big a change 4 years has made to my life…and what brought it to my attention?

On my 4th Burgerthday, I was asked to represent Cardlytics and our partners, SimpleOffers at the Metro NY Sysco Food Show. Sysco is a Food Distribution company. Restaurants from all over America buy their restaurant supplies from them be it food, flatware, service goods, napkins, etc. They also offer marketing, menu and other consulting services for their restaurant partners. It’s literally one stop shopping for restaurants. Everyone once in awhile Sysco organizes a Food show, calling together all their supplier so that restauranteurs can sample from & learn about all the options available to them by working with Sysco.

This year’s Food show was held at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Seacacus, NJ.

After settling into the SimpleOffers booth and getting organized for the day, I took a moment to walk around the Food Show.  There were dozens and dozens and vendors set up showcasing their offerings. Here’s a quick run through of some of what Sysco offers to their customers.

We power the cash back reward programs for Financial Institutions like Bank of America’s “BankAmeriDeals.” We do this by offering you cash back by eating at restaurants near you who work with Sysco.

My sincere, personal and heartfelt thanks to everyone that has supported me, this blog and any of my other conquests out there, especially my talented, creative, supportive, beautiful and amazing wife & author, Cara Lynn Shultz. I live a truly blessed life where I get to do and be a part of stuff like this. I am touched by the people I have met and continue to meet because of this blog. It’s a pleasure, an honor and a hell of a lot of fun to do this.

However, there are a lot of people out there who aren’t as fortunate and struggle every deal to eat any meal, let alone a healthy one. If you have the time, cash or ability, please help out a charity, especially a local one, that’s help to feed those in need. Here in New York, my two favorites are the Food Bank for New York City & God’s Love We Deliver.

Thank you

Rev
