Hey, not sure if you guys got the memo. But in case you didn’t, I like Cheeseburgers.
One of my longstanding fave Cheeseburgers in NYC, the Trailer Park Lounge. The Burgers come with sweet potato fries or tater tots. You know what to do.
How do you reinvent or reinvigorate a classic? We get really attached to things and sometimes change can upset the balance.
Remember New Coke? Yeah, that was gross and moreover it became Coca-Cola advocates to become angry and disenfranchised with the brand.
Changes to products we feel really passionate about are very hard for a brand to tackle but sometimes you have to do them to bring attention back to the business. I’m here to tell you that new changes to the Big Mac from McDonald’s are not going to upset you. In fact, you’ll be lovin it!
You can now get your two all beef patties, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions all on a sesame seed bun with a new Sriracha Big Mac sauce! The sauce itself is really tangy and has a nice kick to it. It’s a tasty new option to enjoy and old classic. But the real secret is to use it to dip your nuggets and fries!
It’s also the right sauce to pull together a Double Quarter Pounder, Double Premium Chicken, Grand Mac — if you’ve got the skills to build it.
Sometimes you have a Burger for breakfast.
Then you have another for lunch.
Then you go out for a 2nd lunch and the last thing you’re craving is a Burger.
But you’re in Fort Worth Chimy’s and they have a green chile Cheeseburger on the menu. I mean, what are you supposed to do?
You get the green chile Cheeseburger right?
Or does that just happen to me?
How about a Burger party?
That’s sounds fun, right? Here’s my suggestion: go to The Horny Ram and order all the Burgers!
My fave was the Double Smashed with two parties, American cheese, shredded lettuce, grilled pickles and secret sauce.
Pro-tip, add onion strings!
There are a lot of reasons to like New Brunswick, NJ. Even though its only 6 miles big its a central hub of jobs, education and culture.
It’s home to Rutgers University, Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb and a whole host of hospitals and medical learning facilitates. One of the very first public readings of the Declaration of Independence took place there on July 9, 1776.
Many famous people have come from New Brunswick including Michael Douglas, Robert Wood Johnson, Joyce Kilmer Jim Norton, and Ted Kubiak. It’s also the home to the fictitious characters in the 1980’s sitcom Charles In Charge.
It’s also home to one of the greatest sandwiches of all times, the Fat Sandwich and Grease Trucks.
But that’s not what we are here to talk about today. New Brunswick is also known for a pretty intense history in the music scene, namely punk, indie, hardcore and metal. The Gaslight Anthem, The Bouncing Souls, Midtown, Lifetime, Thursday and God Forbid are just a few examples of the bands that called New Brunswick home.
The latter 2 both share a history with another former New Brunswick resident; me!
In a former life, before I was the marketing and food dude you know now, I spent 11 years in the music business running a couple of different agencies, primarily focused on artist management. I had an amazing time, met a lot of incredible people and accomplished some really unreal things all while learning how to develop products, run businesses and managing people.
It was an experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything. The bands I worked with, my business partners, my employees and team members of the band’s I represented had a lot of fun and have incredible stories to tell.
Doc Coyle, one of the 2 guitarists of God Forbid now has his own podcast called The Ex Man. On the show he talks to other band members and music business professionals about the challenges of the ever changing music business. Often times, the conversations pick apart things that happen in the past with an eye on learning how to effect the future.
Doc invited me onto the show to talk about the time we worked together. The bulk of the conversation is an autopsy on 4 years of my career where I took an underground band from being unsigned to playing on Ozzfest in under 4 years. We talk about everything that went right and everything that went wrong including why at the height of the bands career I chose to stop working with them.
They were an absolutely incredible 5 piece metal band that blended old school US thrash, European technical metal, NJ hardcore with a fire burning passion to drive forward. The music was incredibly heavy and melodic while remaining technical and yet still catchy. Their live show was crushing. They knew how to command a room. They were 5 of the funniest people I have ever met and their story is incredibly unique.

Have you ever a “Fat Sandwich?”
Its a sandwich served on a long roll with a number of different ingredients like Burgers, cheesesteak, gyro, falafel, cheese, chicken fingers, sauces, ketchup, lettuce, bacon, tomatoes, eggs, mozzarellas cheese and almost always topped with french fries.
They were invented in New Brunswick in 1979. The original was called the “Fat Cat” and was 2 Cheeseburgers on a long roll topped with French Fries.
Fat Sandwiches were made famous by the New Brunswick “Grease Trucks” (they have their own Wikipedia page!), a gathering of food trucks located on campus where students, teachers and locals could get fresh, hot food.
Each of the truck owners tried to outdo each other by coming up with crazier and crazier versions of the sandwiches. Some fraternities on campus have their own Fat Sandwich. Yours truly once won a contest and had the “Fat Reverend” added to a menu at Jimmy’s. It had grilled roast beef, hot sauce, white sauce, mozzarella sticks and french fries.
The trucks have gone through a number of controversies which ultimately lead to their mobile demise. Several morphed into brick and mortar stores like Jimmy’s Grill & Specialties (formerly Sunshine Truck) and RU Hungry?
The tradition of Fat Sandwiches lives on and you can still get one if you are curious to taste what Maxim Magazine‘s called the best sandwich in the nation or what Sports Illustrated named “number one post game activity in the country.”
This is the Fat Russian from RU Hungry. It’s a Cheesesteak, Burger and chicken fingers topped with onions rings, lettuce, french fries, hot sauce and ketchup. You need to eat this.
If you’ve never had a Frita Cubana and you love Burgers… you’re life has a void you did not know it had. My suggestion is you get one immediately.
A Frita is a Cuban version of a Burger with a seasoned ground beef patty on Cuban bread topped with shoestring potatoes. Typically they also have a spicy ketchup like sauce and the really good ones come with an egg and cheese.
My absolute favorite in the entire world is El Mago De Las Fritas in Miami. I will be eternally grateful to Burger Beast for taking me there.

There are a lot of things to love about pizza, right? One of my favorites is the ability to have your cake and eat it too.
Can’t decide on which toppings to get… Go half and half!
Chicken Parm on one side, mushrooms and sausage on the other.
When in or near Hoboken, go to Johnny Pepperoni. It’s the best pizza in town.
