Learn To Optimize An Image For SEO and Search
– A few tips on making your images more searchable

If your blog or website has a lot of images and pictures on it, you can use them to be more searchable. As Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search web crawlers analyze the internet, they are not just looking at your text or links, they also look over your images. There several ways to optimize your images so that these search engines see them and direct traffic back to your site.

Here are a few tips  and best practices on how to optimize your images for SEO and search using photos of Burgers from B&D Burgers in Savannah, GA as examples.

B&D Burgers

1. Use Key Words In Your File Name

Most cameras and devices with cameras will give your image files by default a generic name like “IMG_1234.JPG,” There’s no better way to have your images lost in the web then to leave them with this file name. Instead, using plain English, describe what is in the photo, keeping in mind the subject matter of your page / post.

Let’s use this this photo as an example.

Savannah-GA-BD-Burgers-Optimize-image-search-seo-Burger-Conquest-111414_3689

This is a Burger from B&D Burgers in Savannah, GA on a Pretzel Roll with Lettuce, a Fried Egg and Pimento Cheese. Some ideas for good naming tags could be:

  • b d burger savannah pimento cheese fried egg
  • savannah ga hamburgers customizable bd burgers
  • best burger savannah bd burgers

Or as it relates to this blog post “savannah ga bd burgers optimize image search seo”
2. Use Dashes, Not Underscores In File Names

This is a mistake I made for a very, very long time. Underscores are used more in programming languages and search engines typically see them as joiners between two words.

Using my example again, I would go with “savannah-ga-bd-burgers-optimize-image-search-seo”
3. Use Alt Tags

An alt tag is alternative text to your image that is used when a browser is rendering images. You can add these when you upload the image to your CMS. WordPress makes this very easy by giving you a box where you can enter the Alt Text either during upload or in the media library.

alt text image optimize wordpress

You can also alter it inside the code of your html inside the quotation marks after the word “alt.”

Need to change a whole bunch of image file names at once? Check out this post on using NameChanger app to batch change file names.

And now you not only know how to better us images for SEO but also where to get premium Burgers and Beers in Savannah, GA!

Learn To Use Yahoo Google and Other Search Results To Write Compelling Copy

Learn To Use Yahoo, Google and Other Search Results To Write Compelling Copy
– Search your way to the top of search queries

Did you arrive into this world with the ability to craft a string of single distinct meaningful elements of speech or writing into an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment or new? Or do you struggle to write good well?

Crafting compelling stories, sentences and or content isn’t easy. Those that are good at it make it look real easy and I am saying that after nearly 700 posts on this blog. Being a great writer is a skill that takes time, dedication and practice. You have to do it over and over and over and over and learn from  your mistakes and your victories.

Now that we are in the age of the internet and trackable data, it’s much easier to understand what is or is not compelling copy and by compelling copy, I specifically mean it’s search relevant. In the modern world of search, it’s not about SEO, it’s about back links. The more people that link to, share or mention your content, the higher you will come up in search rankings. In other words the best SEO practice is to have relevant and useful content.

You can use tools like Google Analytics, Twitter Ads, Facebook insights to help you to understand which pieces of your content get the most engagement. But what tools can you use to help craft more compelling content? I use search.

Let me explain. I’ll get an idea on something I would like to write about, in this case, compelling headlines. I’ll then run a number of Google searches on topics and related topics to the subject. As I am running the searches, I take note of the number of results. Based on the number of results that come up, I’ll craft up a headline that I think will most relevantly draw the traffic I am looking to get by helping people to find what they are searching for.

Let’s use this post as an example. To come up with the headline; “How To Use Yahoo Google and Other Search Results To Write Compelling Copy,” I ran a number of Google searches to see what people want to know about compelling headlines.

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_16.20 AM

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_17.47 AM

Notice that “learn” earned nearly 5 million more results than “how. This tells you that there are more people looking to “learn” than for a “how to.”

Now look what happens when you use “headlines” instead of “copy.”

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_17.57 AM

There are far less people looking to learn how to write “headlines” than there are people who need help writing “copy.”

Now that I know this, I can take my search to the next level. I knew I wanted to write about using search to write better headlines so I started to introduce “search” into my query. Look at the difference in results between the word “use” and the word “using.”

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_17.01 AM

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_16.40 AM

Almost 10x more searches with the word “use” than “using.”

Let’s go back to headlines for a moment just so I can demonstrate a point. Check out the results by merely using a plural.

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_15.42 AM

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_16.51 AM

By leaving off 1 letter, you increase your query delivers 10x more results.

Specifically I wanted this post to be about utilizing the power of search engines to help you write better headlines. Let’s measure the generic “search” against the 3 of the biggest search engines.

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_21.03 AM

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_16.04 AM

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_17.24 AM

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_17.36 AM

Both the words “search” and “Google” come up with about the same results, about 1.7 million. But the using “yahoo” or “bing” show almost 16x more queries. Apparently those people who are looking for help in writing compelling copy are looking for it on Yahoo and Bing but not so much Google.

Let’s break all that down to a TL;DR.

In terms of search query results:

  • Learn > How To
  • Copy > Headlines
  • Use > Using
  • Headline > Headlines
  • Yahoo > Bing > Google > Search

When I first set out to write this post, I was thinking about using the title “How to use Google to Write Better Headlines.” Mainly because when you search in Google, it gives you the number of search results which Yahoo does not. But after searching through a number of Google searches, I can see that there is a clear path to a better headline even if it’s not totally correct;

Learn To Use Yahoo Google and Other Search Results To Write Compelling Copy

use_yahoo_results_to_write_compelling_copy_headlines_search_burger_conquest_marketing_blog_25 PM
At the time of writing this blog, that query resulted in 1.02 million results. Click the image above to see how many it has since publishing.

Is this going to guarantee more hits? Time will tell. What it will do is help you to understand what kinds of information people are searching for. If you’re looking to get really granular and learn how to use organic key words to specifically reach your audience through your blog, check out my post on Hittail.

How To Write Yelp Reviews And Be Good For Business

How To Write Yelp Reviews And Be Good For Business

Did you write this review on Yelp?
bad_yelp_reviews_nyc_robertas_nyc_troll

If you did, then you are a troll.

This is an unfair Yelp review of Roberta’s Pizza in Brooklyn, NY. Whomever wrote this is perpetuating the lie that Yelp is bad for business. Yelp is good for business as it helps people to find local businesses and ultimately make a decision on whether to patronize. Yelp can also help business owners to learn about their business and how to grow it.

Unfortunately though, the internet has given trolls, aka anonymous haters, a place to do their worst. As a consumer you need to filter these people out when reading Yelp reviews on a business. Not being seated 3 minutes after close is just a ridiculous request. Chances are there is another issue behind this issue and this person just used it to be rude. You can clearly see that they have no profile photo, no friends and only 3 reviews, which if you click to read, are all negative. This person is a waste of internet space.

Here’s another one for the same restaurant. Can you tell me what is the worst part of this review?
bad_yelp_review_trolls_nyc_robertas

THIS PERSON CLAIMS TO WORK IN THE RESTAURANT BIZ! This character is the worst kind of troll. The rest of their review doesn’t really matter because they should know better than to have done this. I guarantee if someone wrote a negative review about the service they provide or the place they work at, this person would be very angry.

If you have less than a 4 or 5 star experience at a local business, tell the manager or an owner. Do not write a negative review on Yelp about it. Instead, do something to help them be a better business. What if the owner of that restaurant could rate you back on something in your life? You would hate it. Everyone has a bad day here and there. No one is perfect. You are far better off helping someone than hurting them.

Here are some tips on how to write a good Yelp review and help a business rather than hurt them. We’ll use a Burger I recently ate as an example.

AJ’s Burgers
http://ajsburgers.com
542 North Ave
New Rochelle, NY 10801

how_to_write_yelp_reviews_good_for_business_ajs_burgers_new_rochelle_ny_conquest_marketing_blog_1773AJ’s Burgers Sliders Cheeseburger with Grilled Onions on a Martin’s Potato Roll.

YELP DONT’S
Let’s start with the do nots. If any of the following happens to you while patronizing a local business, do not write a Yelp review about it.

  • Rude service from an employee
  • A good or service was not delivered to your expectation
  • The business was closed when you arrived
  • You felt the goods or services were too expensive
  • You did not like the other customers who were also patronizing the business

And the worst, do NOT give a business less than a 5 star if you had a great time, nice food or good service. If it was average or above average, give them a 4 or 5. If you aren’t willing to give them a 4 or 5 star, do NOT write a review on Yelp.

Don’t be that person.
ajs_burgers_yelp_review_48 AM

All of the above are either based on your biased opinion or could easily been rectified by telling someone who works there. Most local business owners want to give you great service. It would be their pleasure to help you rectify a bad situation. The best managers and owners will go out of their way to make a less than 5-star experience become one for you. Keep it between you and the service provider and let them know.

How to post a good review on Yelp

1. On either your browser or in the mobile app, search for the business you want to review. When you get to their page, tap or click “Write a Review.”

Browser:

Mobile:
how_to_write_yelp_reviews_good_for_business_ajs_burgers_new_rochelle_ny_conquest_marketing_blog_2420

2. Click or tap on the 5th star on the right to give them a 5 star rating and type out the specifics of your review in the “Your review” bubble. Yelp even gives you suggestions on what you could write.

Browser:

Mobile:
how_to_write_yelp_reviews_good_for_business_ajs_burgers_new_rochelle_ny_conquest_marketing_blog_2421

3. Once you’ve written something very nice about the business, tap next on mobile or “save now” in the browser. This will save your review for later editing before posting live. You can add in additional information and photos if you like.

how_to_write_yelp_reviews_good_for_business_ajs_burgers_new_rochelle_ny_conquest_marketing_blog_2424

4. If or when you are ready to post, click post.
how_to_write_yelp_reviews_good_for_business_ajs_burgers_new_rochelle_ny_conquest_marketing_blog_53.35 AM

Don’t be a nuisance or a troll, it’s not going to get you anywhere. Use Yelp to be a help and highlight local businesses you like by writing a nice review.

thumper yelp meme If you can't say something nice on Yelp don't Yelp nothing at all

And when you are in New Rochelle, NY visiting AJ’s Burgers, be sure to check in and redeem the order of free Dogs in Dough. They are all natural beef cased hot dogs, wrapped in house made pizza dough. For dipping, the deli mustard is good but the spicy chipotle dip is even better.

The Cattle Call – Ian Russo AKA The Dirty Chef

The Cattle Call –  Ian Russo AKA The Dirty Chef

The Cattle Call – All the beef that’s behind the people who make & connect us to the Burgerverse.

Chef_Ian_Russo_Dirty_Burger_The_Cattle_Call_Burger_Conquest_Interview

Name: Ian Russo (AKA The Dirty Chef)

Website: dirtyburger.com

Where do you live: Brooklyn, New York

Favorite style of Burger:  Traditional American made using the Dirty Style of Cooking.

Favorite Childhood Burger:  Gil Hodges bowling alley and grill in Brooklyn (No longer open).

Burger that haunts your dreams at night: Nothing haunts me.

What is the one Burger you’ve always wanted to try but still have not:  In-N-Out.

The secret to making a great Burger: Have great quality meat with the proper thickness. It is important to salt (using a snowing technique) the burger prior to seasoning it on both sides. Be sure to flip the burger as many times to keep it cooking even and create a crust so all the juices stay inside the burger. Yum.

Under no circumstances whatsoever, what should NEVER be put on a Burger:  Anything goes if you love it…..

If you could eat any Mythical Creature which would it be: Pholus- Mythical creatures make me think too much. Pholus was a friend of Herculous. Seems harmless.

If you could have a Burger with anyone alive, or dead, fictional or real, who would it be and where would you take them: My best friend, Wendy. We would be in Hawaii COCKROACHE COVE, North shore Hawaii with a full moon at 1 am after a night swim we would get out of 80* water while the grill is hot and I would make her my Dirty Burger while I use the light from the moon to see and sip two glasses of her favorite red wine.

Name one Burger in LA that for once, people should get off a plane and go eat instead of In-N-Out: Not that familiar with LA.

Please use this space to talk about or plug anything else you want: About 6 years ago I created Dirty Dust. Within the next couple years tables all around the world will have salt, pepper and Dirty! Dirty Dust® is my spice blend which transforms foods that are ordinary to extraordinary! From sweet things like chocolate and caramel to savory foods such as chicken, fish or burgers and everything in between, Dirty Dust® gives you the creativity to enhance the flavors of any food! Along with a mix of other spices, it includes three different peppers—black, white and cayenne, so it’s safe to say Dirty Dust® has some kick to it.

You can add a little honey… or not… it is up to you, but knowing when to add honey can remain your dirty secret. With meats like beef, lamb or chicken, you’ll want to cool the heat by adding honey. For fish and seafood the honey is optional, since the oils in them already balance the heat of the Dirty Dust®.

To learn more about how to incorporate Dirty Dust into your kitchen, visit cookdirty.com. You can also catch Ian compete in the Blue Moon Burger Bash at this year’s Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival, Friday October 17, 2014.

The Top 5 Marketing Podcasts

Other than my wife Cara our cat, our families and friends, the two things in life I am most passionate about are Hamburgers & marketing. (FYI – I’ve hired Captain Obvious as a marketing consultant and he suggested I start the post with that statement.)  A Google search revels that “marketing” is defined as “the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.” To me that seems like a very traditional description but doesn’t really define where marketing is at today and where it’s headed.

We live in a social world and prior to the 1920s and big radio advertising, word of mouth was how we found out about products and services. In 2014, it still is, only now we have all kinds of tools at our disposal to help spread the word of mouth.Tools like social media are helping us to filter out the clutter of broadcast messaging and get back to word of mouth. Who are you going to rely on to suggest a great Burger to eat: me or Yelp?

The answer could be both, but that’s not the point. I’ve built a certain level of trust with you by providing consistent and useful messaging around something I love: Burgers. I’ve been pretty transparent with you on this blog whether it was about Hamburgers, events or marketing and through that, we have a relationship built on that trust. To me, that’s how I see marketing; building up trust around a product or person through consistent and valuable messaging.

I put a lot of thought into this blog and if you’ve been paying attention lately, you’ve noticed that I’ve made a swing to fully incorporate my passion for marketing, specifically content and social marketing. It’s something I really enjoy doing and learning about. My knowledge on marketing, much like Hamburgers, relies on not only putting in an effort to stay well versed but also on a number of trusted resources. One of those resources, and honestly, probably my favorite, are marketing podcasts.

So who are the podcasters that help me to Hamburger better? Let’s explore.

burger_conquest_best_marketing_podcasts_HamburgerHelper_Logo_cut

Being that this a blog about both Burgers and marketing, along with my suggestion on marketing podcasts you should check out, I will also suggest a Burger in or near where each of the hosts lives. One day, I hope to take each of them out for a conversation over delicious Burgers.

Duct Tape Marketing Podcast
– by John Jantsch (@ducttape)

On the Duct Tape Marketing podcast, host John Jantsch interviews thought leaders on a number of subjects that are of value to people in both sales and marketing roles. One of my favorite aspects of the podcast is it’s length. On average, John keeps the podcast under 20 minutes. Granted, that length works for me because it’s slightly shorter than my commute, it’s also been proven by Ted Talks to be a good length to keep someone’s attention. That’s also an example of something I learned from John.

I would take John to Town Topic in Kansas City. MO. Much like I have sources for marketing education and inspiration, I have the same for Burgers. I’ve never been to Town Topic, or Kansas City for that matter, but George Motz, the Indiana Jones of Hamburgers, gives it massive praise. Ever since I first read about it in his book, Hamburger America, I’ve wanted to eat there.

The Marketing Companion Podcast
– by Mark W. Schaefer  (@markwschaefer) & Tom Webster (@webby2001)

burger_conquest_best_marketing_podcasts_tom_webster_mark_schaefer_marketing_smarts_podcast

Sometimes I wonder if this is an actual informational podcast or just a comedic dissertation on marketing and tech. These two guys are incredibly intelligent and well versed in the ways of modern and future marketing but they also like to laugh. On the Marketing Companion Podcast, Tom Webster and Mark Schaefer discuss topical marketing subject from an insiders perception, they also spend a lot of time trying to make each other guffaw. What I like best about their podcast is that you feel like you are sitting at a table listening to two friends having an insightful conversation about marketing best practices along with lots of jokes about Google pants. Jokes aside, they’re both incredible speakers with very intelligent things to share and are great to listen to whether it’s on their podcast or as guests of other podcasts.

Sorry (not sorry) Mark, but you are going to have to drive 3 hours to Memphis to meet me for this one. Dyer’s Burgers on Beale is highly regarded as one of the best Burgers in the all the Burgerverse. What sets Dyer’s apart is that they deep fry their Beef in oil. They strain and process it daily but they’ve never started over so basically, it’s got ties to that first batch of Burgers they ever made in 2012. We need to eat this.

Watch George Motz’s video from “Hamburger America” for more about Dyer’s.

Man, I LOVE Tasty Burger. They’ve captured everything that’s great about the classic American Hamburger stand but in all the best, freshest and modern ways. They use an all natural Beef that’s part of a “never-ever” program where the cattle never receives hormones or anti-biotics. I’ve met the guys behind the place and I can confirm, they are insane (in the good way) because why else would you go through the operational nightmare of having a different specialty Burger every single day?

Marketing Smarts Podcast

The Marketing Smarts podcast is a product of Marketing Profs, an online resource to help people find marketing experts and education. On the podcast, host Kerry O’Shea Gorgone, interviews marketing professionals to get insight on how they build success. The weekly podcast runs about 30 minutes in length. It’s a great podcast to check out if you’re looking for marketing insights and muscle cars. Insiders will get that joke.

I would take Kerry to the Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville in Universal City Walk in Orlando, FL. While the Buff does make a pretty decent Burger, my real motivation is to visit Harry Potter’s Wizarding World. I’ve been to Universal Studios a number of times and love it, but have not been since they opened the Harry Potter portion and I know Kerry is a fan. I’m a people pleaser, what can I say?

I’ve only ever been once, but I LOVE Hodad’s in Ocean Beach and if the line wasn’t too long, that’s where I would take Michael Stelzner. That double Patty, topped with Bacon and Cheese is a classic Burger lovers dream.

Jay wrote one of my favorite books on social media best practices, “Youtility” which I learned about while he was being interviewed on another podcast. After reading the book, I knew I needed to learn more from him and that’s when I discovered the Social Pros Podcast. On each podcast, Jay, along with Jeff Rohrs of ExactTarget and Nick Cicero of Expion, interview experts in social media and discuss best practices and high level thinking. It’s a great listen for behind the scenes look at some of the most successful social media marketers out there.

I’ve never been to Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum but I’ll am dying to eat a Gom cheese-brr-grr. It’s a Loose-Meat style Burger meets a Sloppy Joe meets a Grilled Cheese. Seriously, right? It’s the kind of Sandwich that legends are written about but it’s not just the Burger that makes me want to take Jay and his crew to Zaharakos. The business was originally opened in 1900 and stayed in the Zaharakos family for 106 years. When Lew Zaharako passed away in 2006, there was no one left in the family who was up to the task and the business became property of Columbus Capital Foundation. In 2007, Tony Moravec bought the place and spent about $3.5 million to renovate, restore and upgrade the parlor. It now stands today as a tribute to the family, the business and the history of the American Ice Cream Parlor.

The Best Burgers In New Jersey – According To You

The Best Burgers In New Jersey – According To You

New Jersey plays an important role in the Burgerverse for many reasons but as it relates to this blog, that’s where the Burger Conquest began back in 2008 at Arthur’s Tavern in Hoboken. As a state, it also claims it’s own Burger style in the form of a NJ Slider, a smashed Patty, flat griddled with Steamed Onions & Cheese served on a White Squishy Role. Some (me) may claim however that the style belongs to Michigan but let’s save that for another discussion.

I recently relocated back from inside the walls of NYC, the known center of the Burgerverse (according to extensive research that I made up for the sake of this post) back to Jersey City. I quickly realized that I have no idea where the best Burgers are in the Garden State. So I took to the blog and asked you to send me your suggestions. Which by the way, you can still submit suggestions via the Best Burger in NJ form.

The Cattle Call – Chef Russell Jackson From The Food Network and Popfoods.tv

The Cattle Call – Chef Russell Jackson From The Food Network and Popfoods.TV

The Cattle Call – All the beef that’s behind the people who make & connect us to the Burgerverse.

chef_russell_jackson_food_network_popfoods_tv_burger_conquest_the_cattle_call_interview

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Chef Russell Jackson developed an early fascination for cooking by watching his mother prepare family dinners on the kitchen’s match-lit stove. Intrigued, he made an early attempt at applesauce at age three and, in the process, launched a career experimenting in the kitchen. San Francisco’s anti-authoritarian culture helped inspire his boldest move: SubCulture Dining (SCD), an underground dining club where the menu focused on sensible ingredients, and Northern California inspiration. SCD combined a darkly exciting atmosphere, a democratic application process, and a clientele ranging from worldly foodies to the young and inexperienced.

Chef Jackson has twice entered the world of television. In 2013 he appeared on Iron Chef America where he battled Chef Jose Garces in a Rhubarb War. That same year Chef Jackson was a contestant on the hit reality show The Next Food Network Star where he became a fan favorite and finished third overall.

Today, four restaurants launches later, and returning from the Food Network Kitchens, Chef Jackson remains active in the New York and San Francisco food scenes. SubCulture Dining is now a bi-coastal affair with a robust schedule and an ambitious agenda. He is currently working on new development projects in New York and San Francisco, and assists as a Board Member at WHEDco.org. Join him for his next culinary r(e)volution..
