The Iron Horse – Holy Meatrimony

The Iron Horse

What better way to celebrate my wedding with 26 friends and family that have traveled from out of town? Stuffed cheese burgers!

The Iron Horse is located in North East New Jersey (near the NY State line) in a refurbished 19th Century Hotel. The place has a homey-rustic vibe, kind of like your family’s cabin “up state.” Their specialty is a stuffed cheese burger. Pick your cheese and they cram it in the middle.

This month’s special was stuffed with havarti horseradish cheese but I chose the gourmet; smoked gouda, havarti, cheddar and swiss. There’s no more exciting moment of anticipation then when you gently squeeze a burger and a cheesy lava flows from within. Although over cooked, the burger was greasy and delicious.

A serious A for effort here and great service.

Lucky’s Famous – When words loose their meaning.

Lucky’s Famous
http://www.luckysfamousburgers.com
370 West 52nd St
New York, NY

On this historic election day, I did my part as a US citizen and voted for the presidential election. I then thought I would do my civic duty as a bugerist and report one in for you. An educated voter is the best kind!

I love the vibe of this 1950s futuristic vision of a burger shop in Hell’s Kitchen. Only a couple seats and stools and a small, short order menu. That’s a sign of dedication. Unfortunately, the excitement ends there.

$9 gets you Lucky #1; a cheese burger, fries and a fountain soda. The fries are nothing special although cooked perfectly. The best part about the not so big burger was the Lucky Sauce. A buttery kind of maybe 1000 island style dressing. Avoid the chipotle mayo. It tastes like cigarettes and cayenne in mayo. The burger itself was good but not great.

I’m not sure how they got “famous” but its not because they have “The Best Burgers On Earth!” Maybe its the perfectly round slices of lettuce!

Worth it if you want a fast, greasy burger but not if you are looking for something special.

Royale – Alphabet City is A-OK!

Royale
http://royalenyc.com/
157 Avenue C
New York, NY10009

You can put me at a table in the fanciest restaurant and serve me the most high-end burger one can afford but to me, burgers are best served at a picnic table. If you go to Royale, speed on through the bar area and head to the patio. There’s heat lamps for the winter and you can smoke.

As for the burger – wow – go Royale with Cheese and Bacon. Quality bun, great tasting bacon and the cheddar is strong but not too strong. My medium rare delight was cooked just right and over all, this sports bar makes a darn tootin tasty beef touchdown.

There’s a reason its on top 10 list.

P.S. We don’t judge on sides but the onion rings are amazing!

5 Guys Burgers and Fries – #1 in NYC

5 Guys Burgers and Fries
http://www.fiveguys.com/
296 Bleecker Street
New York, NY 10014

#1 burger in New York City. Although, I should note, best double burger, as each burger you order automatically comes with 2 patties and the boardwalk fries are damn tasty. Might experience a little wait but nothing some free roasted peanuts won’t help!

Burger Burger – Wall Street’s Recession Steak

Burger Burger
http://www.burgerburgerny.com/
77 Pearl Street
New York, NY 10004

In times of recession, Burger is the new steak and this Wall St area delight is there to save the economy. First timers should get the “Berta Burger” – 6 oz of certified Angus beef, cheddar cheese, grilled ham, fried egg, “special sauce” on a burger. Go for the whole wheat bun and always curly over regular.

Shake Shack – Walk-Thru only

Shake Shack

NYC’s answer and victory over In And Out. It’s worth the wait and the beautiful Madison Park surrounding creates a nice ambiance. Much nicer than a parking lot and a drive thru!

Arthur’s in Hoboken – Beef Touchdown!

Arthur’s Tavern
http://www.arthurstavern.com/
237 Washington St.
Hoboken, NJ 07030

Current title holder of best burger in the New York Area. I dare anyone to compete with this 10 ounce bad boy that I was barely able to put my hand’s around.

One bite was all it took to confirm, this was definitely the best burger in Hudson County and I’ll be damned if it’s not better than anything I have had in New York City. It was big, meaty, juicy, cooked just right with cheddar, lettuce and on a fresh kaiser roll. Truly, truly delicious and I couldn’t stop until all 10 juicy ounces had gone into my mouth.

ALL THIS FOR $6.25!??!?! Color me impressed Arthur’s! YOU WIN.

July 27th – Wing-Off 5! / Dan’s birthday

It was Dan’s birthday so we decided to have one of his favorite events – a Wing-Off! With undefeated champs Scruffy Duffy’s closed for re-modeling, we default to their sister location, Lansdowne Road vs. new challenger Croxley Ale House. Even with a very strong challenger, it was unanimous vote, Lansdowne Hands down! The Scruff legacy continues its dynasty. Then out of no where, a 3rd challenger stepped to the wing errr I mean ring! The newly opened 123 BurgerShotBeer with their 123 Hot wings. The $2 orange tic-tac shots were cute but this place could not hold a candle to Lansdowne.

BUT WAIT! That’s not all! Afterwards we retired to Patrick’s backyard where I grilled Chef Boyardee Ravioli! Covered in an Utz potato chip crumble, these were to die for. Followed by some pool at Mean Fiddler, the day was a true treat, at least that is what I am telling my insides to calm them down.

The big announcement! WING-OFF 6 to be held on October 5th, 2008!
WHO WILL LANSDOWNE TAKE ON NEXT? Submit your suggestions to me but be sure to save the date.
