THE CONQUEST
I grew up on cartoons, Buck Rogers and Colecovision and swear that these 3 things have caused a deep seated attention deficit disorder within me that when matched with the OCD my Mother gave me by repeated bed room cleaning demands, allows me to stay focused as long as there is constant change in my life. It plays out well in the bar I own, Idle Hands when we get to put together unique events like our “Pumpkin Picking Party” where we served the last 15 pumpkin beers available in NYC or our “Trick-Can-Treat” Halloween bash that featured 19 different beer in cans. Our love for events and fun parties recently brought the Food Network’s “Great Food Truck Race” victors, Grill ‘Em All into the bars to host a limited serving of items from their competition winning menu.

Just after their departure, we invited Dan Petersen from Brooklyn’s “That Burger Tent” over to take over our kitchen to serve up his tasty “Jersey Burger.” He is normally found on Saturday’s on the corner of 6th and Bedford in Williamsburg cooking up his limited menu just outside the Artists and Fleas market. A few days later, while taking a keg count, I found 2 full boxes of Burger Maker patties, along with some fresh Cabot pepper jack cheese, a crate of sesame seed brioches and truffle oil, that had been left over by Grill ‘Em All on their “NYC Victory Lap.” Looked like another burger event was in store.

Kyle, one of the owners of Billy Hurricanes, offered to jump into the kitchen and serve them up, but with a twist…he was going to make them “Dirty” style. Kyle also is a partner in Thunder Jackson’s, home to the “Dirty” burger (and also a stop on the Grill ‘Em All NYC “Victory Lap”.) It’s a fresh and delicious concoction that is spicy and sweet. While TJ’s won’t reveal the secrets of the Dirty Burger, you can read more about it here. Thus was born, the Dirty Burger Maker Burger at Idle Hands.

Wednesday nights at Idle Hands are typically reserved for specialty beer events and tastings where breweries are invited down to the bar to let our customers try new brews at a discount price and often times of limited edition beers. On this Wednesday in particular, we were hosting one of the USA release parties for the new rum casked beer from Innis and Gunn. Made using the highest of artisan ideas and standards, this beer’s barrel aged taste it’s absolutely beer drinking heaven. Read more here.

Sounded like a great pairing for a burger and Cajun Truffle Tots and priced at $15 was a gosh darn steal.

THE BURGER
It’s sweet. It’s spicy. The “Dirty” preparation is so unique and to have it served on top of an amazing piece of ground steak meat cut and formed into a patty, was a very special treat. While you can still try out these wickedly delicious spices at Thunder Jackson’s, this one time specialty is no longer available. You can still get the order the crispy, golden and extremely delicious Cajun Tater Tots at Billy Hurricane’s, but don’t expect to have them served in the same truffle oil used by Grill ‘Em All. For that, you’ll have to pay a visit to the truck in LA. You can get them with Kyle’s very own smoky chipotle ketchup, which adds an unnecessary extra kick that is pretty damn delicious.

Poco – If You Happen To Be In The East Village

Poco

New York, NY 10009

THE CONQUEST
If you happen to be in or near New York’s East village and are looking for Bourbon, Beer or Rock, stop into the bar I recently opened with my friends Rob and Marc. It’s called Idle Hands Bar and it’s the basement speakeasy for the Mardi Gras Frat Party upstairs known as Billy Hurricanes. With approximately 80 different bourbons and 50 different microbrews, there are more than enough choices to keep the experienced and discerning drinker happy. It’s also a great education for those curious to learn more about the 2 types of beverages. We also serve a variety of old fashioned cocktails, rums, vodkas, tequilas, a selection of decent wines and even craft sodas for our friends who aren’t looking to get toasted. There’s bar food and specialty sandwiches like the “Rise and Shiner”, a breakfast sandwich, only served late night, with eggs, sausage, cheese and a crispy hash brown on an English muffin. I’ve been eating my way around the neighborhood since we get the keys and am always looking for an alternative to the Jalapeno Poppers and Cajun Tots from Billy Hurricane’s.

If you happen to be in or near Idle Hands Bar and would like something to eat in a more traditional restaurant, visit our neighbors, Poco. They offer Spanish meets Southern American comfort food style tapas. The menu was created by award winning chef Abe Lopez, one time victor of the Food Network’s “Chopped”. It’s a great place for an interesting mixed drink, light snack, full meal, brunch, group hang or a nice date. The staff is incredibly friendly, quick and always ready to help you choose something appropriate from their drink and food menu. The tasty lounge is under the watchful care of GM Sarah Grizzle, who is often found in the restaurant greeting customers and suggesting regular and special menu items, like their lamb sliders…

So with that, my wife Cara and our friends Catharine, Maggie and Kyle, owner of Billy Hurricanes, stopped in for a full costume, pre-Halloween bash dinner party.

THE BURGER
To start off, try the Mushroom Truffle Croquettes, which Cara swears by. I would personally suggest the bacon wrapped dates stuffed with blue cheese and almonds, an extremely rich and creamy mix of tastes and textures. With several different versions of Mac and Cheese to choose from, take my word and get the one with pulled pork. It’s a down home combination of awesome and delicious. Plus you’re sharing it, so you won’t have it to weight down the rest of your meal.

Poco offers 3 kinds of sliders; Pulled Pork, Lamb and the beef sliders (actually more of a mini-burger) with manchego cheese, avocado crema, & chorizo aioli. Unfortunately they had run out of the Lamb Sliders (grounds for a Burger Conquest return in the making!) so we got the prior 2. The soft juicy mini-burger is cooked to a perfect medium rare, which is pretty hard to do considering the size. While I love the decision to not let the spices overtake the juicy and fresh ground beef, the crema and chorizo is very slight and could use just a little more. There’s absolutely nothing even remotely chewy about the patty. The Pulled Pork sliders are sweet, smoky and delicious. In fact, the only improvement one could make would be shoving a bite of the Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese into the sandwich (that is an order, not a suggestion.)

Poco is a fantastic place to eat and we are proud to become their neighbors.

Lure Fishbar – I Don’t Like Seafood

Lure Fishbar
http://lurefishbar.tumblr.com/
142 Mercer Street
New York, NY 10012-3806

THE CONQUEST
File under “things to know about Rev,” I don’t like seafood. Never have and at age 37 I think I can safely say, I never will. As the son of a very proud seafood eating and fishing fan, it’s not like I haven’t been exposed. Believe me, I have many a memory of sitting at a crab shack in Florida and throwing temper tantrums because everything smelled like fish and the only thing served I would eat was bread. Thankfully Bones (my Dad) was a crowd pleaser and always made sure to stop by a fast food burger chain on the way to or from one of these meals. Little did pops know it but his burger problem solving techniques planted a deep-seated feeling of comfort and happiness in my brain.

Fast forward to now. I’m an adult approaching middle age, living and working NYC and married to a fantastic lady…who loves seafood. Cara is a fantastic woman who is smart, very humorous and supportive person. She finds my burger passion and prose to be entertaining, if not delicious. She makes jokes about wishing I had started “Diamond Conquest” or “Lobster Conquest,” which are very funny but in the end, all jokes are based in truth and in this case, Cara loves seafood.

One day as I am clicking around the burgernet I come across the review of a very well praised and hip seafood restaurant in NYC that also happens to serve a burger made with Pat LaFrieda beef. All the light bulbs, bells, whistles, hockey goal lights and slot machine jackpot alerts in my brain all start to sound at the same time. Now I could take my wife out for a fantastic and romantic seafood meal where we didn’t have to do as my Dad would and stop for a burger on the way home!! What will they think of next!?!? Bones would be so excited.

Lure is the brain child of award winning Chef Josh Capon, John McDonald & Josh Pickard. Located in New York City’s Soho area, this basement restaurant is made up to look like the inside of a yacht’s hull. Since my discovery of Lure, we have talked many times about going and I have even in fact tried one of their burgers. Lure won the People’s Choice award Food Network NY Food & Wine Festival Rachel Ray Burger Bash in 2009 with their “Bash Burger.”

We were instantly greeted at the hostess stations by a very loud and hilarious announcement; “the burger boy is here!” We were very quickly shown to our table which was an over sized round booth with more than enough room for a meal fit for a King and Queen as well as my camera, iPhone and both of our bags. Cara opened the menu and her eyes popped out of her head. As I was about to open mind, the maître de came up to the table and said, “Listen burger boy, no need to open the menu. For you, I suggest our secret menu item, the bash burger. It’s the burger we served at the Burger Bash. It’s not on the menu but we would love to make you one.”

Done.

THE BURGER
Shortly after our order was taken our server arrived with deviled eggs and shrimp skewers. Not really a fan of either, I passed my shrimp onto Cara but did bite into the egg. My #1 issue with deviled eggs is rubbery albumen. I just don’t like the texture and in general regard eggs as a bunch of bites of some white stuff I don’t like just to get to some yellow stuff, which I love. This little appetizer further cemented my opinion. The white casing was indeed cold and rubbery, which I could do without and a fantastic yolky center that was creamy and delicious. So good in fact, that I wished it had been made into a dip.

Let’s be honest, you could say my diet is lacking in vegetables but when it comes to something like boiled and salted edamame, I could easily put away 200-300 in one sitting. If you feel the same way, get your patoot down to Lure as they have some of the freshest edamame I have ever eaten. The little green beans come still in the case and have a slight buttery taste is oh so fantastic. In fact, I opted to continue popping them into my mouth over Lure’s home made potato chips, which are also very good. Do NOT miss out.

God bless Lure Fishbar. If there is one thing they do well that most other’s look over, it’s presentation. Be it the quality of service, the décor, the food, cleanliness of the washrooms, the music playing in the restaurant or repeated table pass bys from the maître de saying “burger boy,” it is clear that no detail is too small. As a fantastic example of said theory, the “Bash Burger” comes topped with 2 onion rings.

You’ll be hard pressed to find an onion ring that matches the crunch, flake, bite, size and taste of the Lure onion ring. It’s big, hot and savory side dish that could almost swoon you away from your main course. Nothing is disgusting like an onion ring, which once bitten, produces a slimy onion slice that pulls out leaving behind just the crust. Onion rings should be about the whole experience and the Lure “O Rings” will not disappoint.

Also of note, is the Mac and Cheese. It’s a crunchy on top, soft in the middle bowl of two things that are just never bad, cheese and pasta. Serving this dish is a dicey move for a restaurant especially when most of the population of the US grew up and still the prefers the stove cooked and straight out of the box version of it. Lure did a great job making their own version but I wouldn’t necessarily say you have to get it. Bottom line, if you like Mac and Cheese, you’ll appreciate this one.

Even though I had eaten this burger at the aforementioned Bash, I did say I wanted to eat it at the restaurant. With much hype and anticipation building towards the Lure Fishbar burger, the moment had finally come. The entire sandwich was right in that not-too-big yet not-too-small size that fits perfectly in your hands and in your belly. The beef is tightly packed giving it a slightly coarse texture. The juiciness of this patty would turn your regular hamburger bun into mush but not the roll used here. The “Bash Burger,” a 6oz patty, caramelized onion and bacon jam, shaved pickles, American cheese, and secret sauce. It’s served on a fresh made soft yet sturdy, toasted sesame seed bun. Taken from high quality cuts, the beef tastes natural and yet still has the subtle hints of flavors that LaFrieda has become known for. I really, really loved the bacon and onion jam and would’ve loved it even more if they had not applied it so sparingly. The magical meeting of salty and sweet in the savory profile of these two items when combined is a taste nirvana. I just wished there was more. The creamy slice of cheese worked itself into a mediating position in the flavor of the burger without ever taking the spotlight away from the beef. Was it good? Definitely. I do have one complaint though and it’s the ketchup, which wasn’t bad for what it was but in general, I don’t like the stuff. Don’t worry Lure, it’s not you, it’s me.

Having exposed myself in that fashion I will have no problem admitting I like ketchup on French fries. I see it as the exception to the rule that proves the rule. Whereas the ketchup completely, detracted from the burger, it made the salty and crispy fires at Lure even better. Be sure to get your fries with a side of the Dijon style mustard, one of my favorite ways to eat this hot tasty side.

How were the Smoked Salmon Pizza and the Steamed Branzino? I have no idea but I can tell you Cara claimed she could not wait to eat here again!

THE CONQUEST
First there was a man. Then there was a burger. Then there was a tent. Now people are happy when visit the combo of all 3. Only a few months ago, burger-junkie Dan Petersen had a dream to open a burger restaurant. With the massive financial barriers involved in that idea, Dan took his idea and found a cost effective way to bring gourmet burgers to the people … a tent and a grill. Welcome to That Burger Tent.

On Saturday’s and Sunday’s you will find Dan in his tent at the corner North 6th Street between Bedford and Berry in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Just look for the tent out side of Artists & Fleas flea market. But I already told you that story, so let’s jump ahead to now. Turns out Dan also loves beer, I mean how can you blame him? Beer is awesome. Insert light bulb going off over head.

Some friends and I recently opened a combination of two bars in the East Village; 1. the Mardi-Gras frat party gone wrong more commonly known as Billy Hurricane’s and 2. the basement bourbon, beer and rock speakeasy, Idle Hands Bar. Its a great combo of Bourbon Street and Bourbon Bar or speakeasy / speakloudly, if you will. We’re having a lot of fun and serving a of crazy beers, bourbons, mixed cocktails and laughter. We also have a kitchen and thought it would be a nifty idea to have Dan from bring his proprietary blend of Pat LaFrieda beef and serve his DELICIOUS “Jersey Burger” at the bar(s). See, we can do something Dan can’t, serve beer with the burger. For $7, that is exactly what we did.

As if that wasn’t enough, we also invited in our buddy, The King AdPoch to host the very first night of Active Minds Team Trivia.

Details:
4 rounds, 3 questions per round. 1 minute to tun in your answers (countdown provided.) Bet 5,3,1 each once per round – you do not lose points if you are wrong. There will be a Final Bonus question that can change everything, There are also periodic bonus points on some questions.

Prizes: FREE BAR TABS AT IDLE HANDS!

DONT’S: No Cell Phones, Laptops, PDA’s, cheating, shouting out the answers, drinking water

DO’s: Enjoy a huge selection of Craft Beers, High End Bourbons, and PBR & Schlitz cans, listen to some good music, hang with friends, and most of all HAVE FUN!

Topics range from, TV/Movies, Sports, Current Events, Geography, Math, Random/Bizzaro, Music, Food/Beverage, and the HEAVY METAL* question of the week.

* – you don’t have to be a fan of Heavy Metal to know the answers, but it helps!

It was a night full of burgers, beers and brains.

THE BURGER
Dan’s burger is delicious, trust me on that. You can read my full review here. Due to the onions, brisket and short ribs, there’s is the tiniest hint of sweetness in the flavor of the sandwich that is unmistakable. The cheese he is using creates a creamy blanket that cradles the toppings and patty. In fact, I would say the only possible way to make this burger any better would be to serve it with beer!! Lucky for you, that is what we are doing!

Rub BBQ – Head banging your head against the Grill ‘Em Wall

Rub BBQ
http://www.rubbbq.net/
208 West 23rd Street
New York, NY 10011

THE CONQUEST
Sometimes idioms and phrases take on new meanings when their meanings become all too true and or ironic. I suppose that is what makes them idioms. That is what gives them their colloquial idiosyncrasy. We’re all familiar with the phrase “bang your head against the wall,” which is referring the repeated attempts made by a person or people to achieve what is not possible. Add in a good dose of heavy metal music and you get exactly what happened on this day of my life;

“Head banging your head against the Grill ‘Em Wall.”

After 5 days of hamburger heavy metal madness in New York City with the guys from Grill ‘Em All Truck, winners of The Food Network’s “Great Food Truck Race,” how did we celebrate? The guys asked me to take them for the best burger in NYC and for that, there is only one place you can go, Rub BBQ. But let’s get back to that in a New York minute.

Only two days prior, we had taken over the kitchen at Rub on the Grill ‘Em All Truck’s “Victory Lap,” a thank you to the fine city that made the victorious. Out of 8 kitchen take overs in 4 days, the lunch service at Rub was the only location where the guys served their limited edition “Pantera Burger.” This intense creation was made by stacking a brick of fried macaroni and cheese, Grill ‘Em All’s signature garlic aioli, a “NY Blend” beef patty from Burger Maker Inc, crispy bacon and a 3rd pound of Rub BBQ’s famous pulled pork in between an artisan sesame seed brioche.

As the Pantera was being served and patrons stomachs were being moshed by this Texas Cowboy from Hell, all we were saying back in the kitchen was “we need to come back here on Monday and eat the Rub BBQ secret menu burger!!” Yup, only we are crazy enough to celebrate an amazing burger party with a burger. But to be honest, the Monday Night Burger tradition at Rub is, in my opinion, the finest in all the land.

You see, every Monday, starting at 6 pm Rub owner Andrew Fischel and Chef Scott Smith unleash their burger love by offering a limited amount of 2 different burgers; 1. The Monday Night Rub Secret Burger, a secret blend of in-house ground beef, cooked smashed style, with grilled onions, small pickle slices, a slice of Velveeta cheese and the chipotle based special sauce burger served on a buttered and grilled bun and 2. The weekly special, which in this case was the infamous Giovanni Burger! Made famous by Ritzy Lunch in Clarksburg, WV, the Giovanni burger is served with fresh mozzarella and roasted red peppers served between two pieces of thick, buttered, garlic toast.

If you love burgers, do not miss out and you will experience what I promised Grill ‘Em All, a delicious burgery adventure.

THE BURGER
I make jokes about it all the time but it’s true, if you are friend to Andrew he shows you his love and appreciate by attempting to murder you with meat. I don’t care how hungry I am or how much I attempt to control my ordering at Rub, it simply can not be done. Trying to eat light here is the equivalent of banging one’s head against a BBQ smoker. This meal, like every other one I have had here, started exactly the same, with enough food to feed a Roman army. After platefuls of their AMAZING BBQ pastrami, hot wings, BBQ bacon, Frito Pie and whatever the hell else was thrown at us, we still had 2 burgers to rifle through.

We started with the traditional Rub BBQ burger namesake and it was delicious as always! For my full review on the burger, click here. After devouring the delicious treat, we all had to step outside for fresh and air, and for some, a cigarette. Yes, it’s that damn good. With the clock ticking before they had to get on their flight, Chef Scott emerged from the food laboratory known as Rub’s “kitchen” with platefuls of Giovanni Burgers.

Using fresh Italian bread from the Wholefoods Market only 2 blocks away, Scott slices the bread into thick pieces before covering them in a garlic butter and then toasting it. It’s then piled with the signature Rub burger patty, red peppers that Rub roasted only 60 minutes prior and a slice of finely made mozzarella cheese. Once hot, the cheese melts down to a thick chewy cloud. The peppers taste as though they were pulled from a garden that afternoon, something you wouldn’t expect to find at BBQ restaurant but that is why they should never be underestimated. The meat is so well seasoned and made from such an amazing cut that all you get is natural beef taste and so little saltiness, leaving that sensation up to the command of the garlic toast.

While you won’t be able to get one for yourself as Rub changes the special every single week, I am sure whatever they are serving when you do stop in, will be amazing. Hopefully you won’t go there, like we did, after 5 days straight of eating burgers! Bang your head, hamburgers will drive you mad!

Grill ‘Em All NYC Victory Lap Sells Out

The Grill ‘Em All NYC Victory Lap Sells Out!!
http://grillemalltruck.com

To celebrate their recent victory on the Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race,” the guys from the Los Angeles based Grill ‘Em All Truck made a triumphant return to NYC to serve their burgers. Unbelievably appreciative of the support that New York City showed to help them win the competition, the guys took over 8 restaurant kitchens to serve their unique menu. With A LOT of help from Burger Conquest, Burger Maker, Whisk, Bar Coastal and Shmaltz Brewing, the Grill ‘Em All crew sold out every single performance on the “Victory Lap.”

No two services were the same as they were in different restaurants and with a constantly changing and limited menu. While the unique events were extremely complicated and difficult to plan, the guys proved they can do what they do best, without the truck that gave them notoriety, THE BEAST!

As the “Victory Lap” rolled on, secret menu items were announced and added to the menu. Thrillist let out the word on the extremely limited burger, the Dee Snider.

Also announced was the FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE. It allowed fans to “upgrade their burger” by letting the patty take a ride in the Bar Coastal “Suicide” hot wing sauce, thus creating a sandwich that was as hot as the sun.

During the last meal on the “Victory Lap'” at Traffic The Tankard was announced via twitter practically challenging customers by allowing the Chef to top a burger with whatever they were feeling at that moment.

The real surprise came in the form of The Annihilator, a burger only served twice while at Traffic. The burger was an inhuman stack of multiple grilled cheese sandwiches, Burger Maker Patties, bacon, french fries and more cheese! This monster was served to 2 patrons as a surprise, one of which was ex-NFL player and now CBS College Football Analyst, Brian Jones.

Several hungry and excited fans attended multiple meal services and were able to sample several different Grill ‘Em All Truck signature burgers. One such satisfied customer was Camille Ford, the Host of the Travel Channel’s “Food Wars.” The Grill ‘Em All guys met Camille when they were once featured on the LA Burger Wars episode of the show.

Thanks to a number of talented chefs, friendly restaurants, hardworking cooks and servers and a whole mess of hungry people, the Grill ‘Em All “Victory Lap” was a massive success and a ton of fun. On behalf of Burger Conquest and Grill ‘Em All, we say “thank you New York. We love you too!” They will be back again but not sure when.

The rest of the world had better look out, we are already planning on doing this in other cities. Interested restaurants and parties should contact bookgrillemall@burgerconquest.com

One last time, a massive thank you to Burger Conquest, Burger Maker, Whisk, Bar Coastal and Shmaltz Brewing for helping to make this event happen.

Here is a gallery of behind the scenes and in the action photos I was able to take during the Grill ‘Em All “Victory Lap.”

The Grill ‘Em All Victory Lap Continues – NYC Crushed By Burgers

The Grill ‘Em All Victory Lap Continues – NYC Crushed By Burgers

Yesterday was the first day of the Grill ‘Em All Victory Lap. The massive event kicked off at Idle Hands Bar for the release party for their new “Grandma’s Mosh Pitt” BBQ sauce in conjunction with www.metalinsider.net ‘s Mosh Potatoes; “The Rock and Roll Cook Book” release party.

There wasn’t much time to celebrate as burgers needed as the first meal of their “tour” was about to begin.

Duke’s
www.dukesnyc.com
99 East 19th Street
New York, NY

Menu:
Hannah Montana, Blue Cheer, Waste ‘Em All & truffle fries
*Limited to 100 burgers

Burger service started at 8 pm on the nose as Duke’s was already packed with hungry fans waiting to “take it to the face!” with one of the signature Grill ‘Em All burgers. Waste ‘Em All, the specialty burger of the evening was far and above the fan favorite. The popular menu item comes to NYC with a little local twist…all beer used in making the beer soaked onions comes from Brooklyn based Shmaltz brewery. A whopping 275 pounds of onions have been carefully prepared in the delicious “Sword Swallower” Steel Hop Lager. Made with 8 different types of hops and 4 different malts, the sweet and peppery subtleties of the brew really bring out the flavor in the onions. A few locations on the Victory Lap will be offering bottles of the beer for you to wash down your burger with.

The service, limited to 100 burgers only and truffle fries flew by. A few well informed diners got a chance to sample the Thrillist secret menu burger, the Dee Snider. The twisted burger known as the Dee Snider comes with local peanut butter, strawberry jelly, bacon, and sriracha. Full details can be found here. Before we knew it, the burgers were gone and it was time to relax for a beer.

If you plan on coming out to any of the other events this weekend, I heavily suggest getting their early. Also, be sure to bring CASH because we can not accept credit cards for Grill ‘Em All t-shirts and hats. Also, make sure you check into the “Grill ‘Em All Victory Lap” location on foursquare. Check ins get $1 off t-shirts and hats, just find me (REV), in the Yankees baseball cap.

Me, I had the last burger of the night, the Molly Hatchet and it was better than I had imagined. The Burger Maker “NY Blend” beef patty is an amazing addition to this already delicious sandwich.

Freddy Sez – The True Spirit of the Fans

You could hear it coming from 10 sections away. It was that familiar noise that every Yankee fans recognizes. To you it would sound like a spoon hitting a frying pan but to me, and the rest of my fellow Yankee fans, all we heard was the spirit of what it means to be a baseball fan.

Yesterday the world suffered a loss of a man that made us all love the sport of baseball and moreover rally behind the greatest baseball team in the land, the New York Yankees. Freddy “Sez” Schuman, born in The Bronx in 1925, sadly, passed away from a heart attack. To be a Yankee’s fan is to be a Freddy fan. The only thing he wanted to bring to the people was his love and support for a team whose old stadium, was the same age as him.

Freddy Sez on Burger Conquest from Yankees opening day 2010.

A Yankee game will never be the same without him and I know from time to time, the sound of his rally clang will be carried faintly in the halls of Yankee Stadium. From everyone at Burger Conquest, we all say thank you to Freddy Sez for reminding us that there is no better cure for your ailments than a Yankee’s World Series Victory.

Mel’s Burger Bar – Burger Conquest Celebrates Its 2nd Birthday

Mel’s Burger Bar
http://www.melsburgerbar.com/
2850 Broadway
New York, NY 10025-7829

On Friday, October 16th, 5 friends went out for a burger at Arthur’s Steakhouse in Hoboken, NJ. On that day, Burger Conquest was born. 730 days later, we are celebrating our second “Burgerthday!” The rest is burger history.

THE STATS
730 days
299 blog posts
294 Burgers eaten by Rev (138 thus far in 2010)
14 Wing-Offs
0 “10 out of 10 ounces”

THE CONQUEST
What better way to celebrate the 2 year mark of my Glorious Pursuit of Delicious Burgers than with a burger!??! With much reason to rejoice, I gathered up my wife and our friends Doug and Melinda for a birthday Burger Conquest.

New on the NYC burger map, Mel’s Burger Bar, now open on the Upper West Side has been kicking up some noize with their interesting menu. Using Pat LaFrieda meats, Mel’s serves a small list of gourmet burgers including “The Original,” a tribute to Louis Lunch, birthplace of the burger. At Mel’s you can get your burger with an interesting selection of sauces, toppings, cheeses, additional main courses, sides all while washing it down with a unique collection of microbrews, wines, punches, mixed cocktails and spiked milkshakes. For the microbrew nerd, like myself, Mel’s array of beers are available in 32 & 64 oz growlers, which yes, are available for take out! The buzz had been growing and thanks to burger buddy Tori Katz at Berk Communications, I was able to get us a table at this already VERY BUSY restaurant on perhaps the most important day in the Burger Conquest year.

THE BURGER
Nothing irks me like an establishment that goes to the trouble to offer gourmet specialties but then neglects to create a support menu that does the same. Thankfully Chef Rich Robson and his crew have paid as much detail to the rest of the menu that supports their burger efforts. In fact, it took me a good 10 minutes to pick a burger, apps, sides and a beer as each selection required a moment of narrowing down a list of great options.

As you all know, I host the NYC Wing-Off, a competition to find the best hot wings in NYC. It began as an argument between Doug and I over blackberry messenger, as he likes to remind me, about who had better wings; Atomic Wings at Down the Hatch or the new defunct Scruffy Duffy’s. After 4 years of Wing competition, we only recently crowned the best medium and hot wings in NYC to Bar-Coastal.

That doesn’t mean we are done and in fact, the research and competition continues, especially when we happen upon great hot wings, like those at Mel’s Burger Bar. MMMMMMM BUDDY!! The Mel’s wing are very saucy with great peppery and smokey tastes. There is minimal breading on these very meaty wings. They have a nice heat which never over powers the actual flavors. We hate it when wings are made with a focus on the heat, forgetting about the taste. Unfortunately for Mel’s, and the NYC Wing-Off crew, this place opened a few weeks too late to be considered as an entrant into the NYC Wing-off.

So far, we were off to a great start and if anything, I was even hungrier than when we first sat down. A quick run to the bathroom due to the copious amount of microbrew being consumed, left me in a state of confusion. The 3 potty room doors are unmarked and open inward, leaving the question of which to use as well as which is available. All I can say is “good luck.” I quickly returned to the table moments before the burgers and sides arrived.

After a few mandatory pictures of my “CHEESEBURGERBABY” (with Lettuce, Onions, Cheese, Served on a Potato Roll), I sank in my chompers. Mel’s burger has a great full-flavored, backyard barbecue taste. This is the kind of burger we all grew up on, served as a gourmet restaurant style sandwich. The searing process used to cook the beef locks in juice so it explodes in your mouth under the weight of a bite. I’m a huge fan of all things onion but felt like the raw ones included on the CHEESEBURGERBABY only got in way of the burger.

If you’ve ever had disco fries, you know that no one can resist their power. Disco fries are a NJ diner sensation comprised of french fries topped with gravy and cheese. At Mel’s they melt sheets of American cheese across the top of the crispy fries. I had to contain myself from eating all of them. I would’ve liked a little more gravy but loved the dish in general.

I LOVE MEATBALLS! No really, I am practically obsessed with them. In recent times they have become my favorite late night snack, side item, topping and add on in the entire food world. Mel’s offers chicken meatballs as a side item or with a spaghetti entree. We could not resist an order and were happy to find them to be extremely juicy and flavorful. The use a very classic style red sauce with dominant tomato and garlic tastes. I would not suggest passing them over in your order.

Before we continue, let’s agree on something; bacon is awesome. There is no meaty treat that brings about an equivalent amount of excitement that it’s salted and smokey traits do. While bacon is readily available everywhere and as a general rule, always good, there is one that is held above the rest. Wisconsin based Nueske’s smoked applewood bacon has been an industry favorite since coming into the market in 1933. While I could’ve ordered on top of my burger, I figured a bacon of this stature deserved to be a stand alone offering in this meal. GOTDAYMN! It’s smoky, salty, juicy bacon that’s crisp without being even remotely burnt. It has more of a barbecued pork flavor than a standard salty burnt bacon. It’s pure bacony magic.

If there is one thing Mel’s gets right, its everything. All the attention is focused on the star of the show, the burger, but at Mel’s every thing offered has been chosen for a taste for quality.

As Burger Conquest is a year older now, I want to introduce a new feature into the site. On top of locations, interesting stories, photos and reviews, I will now be bringing you a burger by burger, up to the blog, total number of burgers eaten by ME as I continue my Quest for the Glorious Pursuit of Delicious burgers.

THE BURGER COUNTQUEST
