Rare Bar & Grill – Journalistic Burger Integrity Never Tasted So Good!

Rare Bar & Grill

THE STORY
On a cold early day in December, I open my Outlook like any other day and my in box is filled with the days normal to dos, didn’t dos and probably should just forget-abouts and move-ons. But this day was different.

Amidst the rubble I found one very special email. No it wasn’t advertising enlargement options, offshore financial gain or sultry temptations (I do have a quarantine program!) This email contained an invite from Kylene at KB Networks, a well spoken for public relations firm that specializes in chefs and restaurants, for a burger tasting at Rare Bar & Grill.

“Oh Br’er Bear, Please don’t throw me in dat briar patch!” Do I want to come taste some burgers? YES I WANT TO COME TASTE SOME BURGERS!! I gathered up fellow foodies Marc the “Bacon Jew” and Jason from Burger of the Month Club and headed up to midtown for the tasting.

According to the Rare Bar & Grill website, owners Howard, Ross and Douglas wanted to create an upscale restaurant around an American classic, the hamburger. Located only a couple of blocks from Grand Central Station, Rare can be found attached to the Affinia Shelbourne hotel. You’ll be as surprised as I was once you enter to learn that Rare has no traditional steaks on the menu as the look and the feel of the place is very NYC Steakhouse. Lot’s of wood, red curtains and a formal, yet laid back atmosphere. You can choose to sit in / at the bar or be formally seated at a table in the back. Burger options range as a wide as chuck, bison, brisket, chicken, tuna, veggie and have a wide array of toppings and preparations.

As Jason, Marc and I entered, we were lead to a room in the back of the restaurant. There we met Kylene and Evy from KB as well as staff members of Rare. There were 4 tables with 3 seats each, position facing in each other in a circle. It was as though a gigantic hologram map was about to appear before us as we discussed movement of rebel troops or just an easier scenario to serve and converse. Me, I would like to think of myself as the Luke Skywalker of burgers for this occasion.

After a little “hi I am – you are – how are yous – burger shop talk” the food started arriving. They started us off with their “Lollipop Wings,” basically a chicken wing with enough bone to keep your fingers dry along with a side of warm Roquefort fondue. The wings had a really distinct tangy flavor. The sauce was not far from the standard buffalo wing preparation but with a slight hint of orange while not too peppery or hot. They were damn good wings but I could’ve taken a little more heat. As a big fan of the blue cheese family, in fact, for me, the “bluer, the better,” (I.E. penicillin) I love Roquefort cheese! The warming of said cheese loosened it up, making it easier for dipping but had more of a rich Boursin like flavor than a tangy / blue cheese.

As the anticipation for tasty burgers grew, the 2nd “course arrived; the “French Fry Sampler.” It was a mixture of cottage, shoestring and sweet potato fries along with regular ketchup, spicy Mexican ketchup, roasted garlic dip, chipotle aioli and honey maple dipping sauce. The fries were perched in a basket, hoisted high above like medieval royalty above their adorning peasantry of sauces. All 3 types of fries were well done, crispy and full of salty potatoey goodness. In fact, the cottage fries were among the best I had ever had. Both the cottage and the sweet were just of the right thickness. Not too fat, not to wiry, like my Dad used to say “justa-justa.”

The ketchup was a good mix of vinegar, tomatoes and sugar but really nothing special (note; I am a ketchup hater). The Mexican ketchup had a little bit of a bite but not enough to make it taste like hot sauce or salsa. A very unique touch. The chipotle aioli on the other hand was really nice. There was a nice smokey overtone to it’s creaminess. I had trouble moving on from it until I tried the roasted garlic sauce. Oh man! So good. Marc and Jason almost had to pry it from my hands until they were smart enough to tempt me with the combination of sweet potato fries and honey maple sauce. To quote Jason, “this tastes like french toast!” The sugary-salty warm combination was so good that I would actually like to declare this as OK to be served as breakfast, replacing Bill Cosby’s chocolate cake option.

THE BURGERS
The first up on the tasting menu was the “M&M Burger.” This little devilish treat is served medium-rare (is there any other way, really?!?!) flambeed in Makers Mark, topped with caramelized shallots, cheddar cheese and apple smoked bacon. I couldn’t have been more excited to put this in my mouth (that’s what she said) but not nearly as excited as Marc who calls himself a bourbon expert. Little did he know this was coming when he ordered a Maker’s Rocks only a few moments earlier! This greasy little liquored up bad boy was soooo good and so bursting with flavor, that the richness and intensity of the cheddar actually was unnecessary. After a bite or two, I pulled it off the sandwich, and that is coming from a true cheese lover. Once it was off, the true flavors of the bourbon, which was aromatically teasing my olfactory senses, the cut of the meat and the sweet and salty thick bacon all came shining through. Several rounds of “oh my god” came pouring out of our mouths.

“M&M”
9 out of 1o ounces

While our mouths we were still salivating from the “M&M Burgers” they showed up with the “Fashion Burger.” It’s made up of 6 ounces of pure ground ribeye, served in a truffled pastry with a dollop of relish, truffle butter, dijon mustard and chips. It took several bites to truly process all that was happening with mix of ingredients. The crispy and flaky truffle pastry was a sweet meets savory taste sensation all its own and gave a distinctly unique edge to this sandwich. The patty was the most perfectly cooked medium-rare burger I may have ever had the pleasure of eating. That isn’t easy to achieve when A. preparing so many at once and B. in such a small size.! The truffle butter made this thing juice like the lemon running down Led Zepplin’s proverbial leg. It was almost unnecessary but definitely appreciated. I could’ve done with out relish, which I generally dislike and the dijon, although good, was also not needed. The hint of black pepper throughout every bite was awesome.

“Fashion Burger”
8 out of 10 ounces

At this point, I thought I was about to either pass out from a meat coma or have my waist line bust apart and I knew that 2nd “M&M” burger was a delicious mistake. When the “T-Bone Steakhouse Burger” showed up on our table, I began to pray to the meat gods to help me through this. I have no idea how it stood upright as it was stacked so high! It’s a blend of sirloin and strip, flambeed in tequila, wrapped in apple smoked bacon, topped with crispy onions and cheddar. Look at the picture below, it was taller than a pepper shaker. If this is considered a slider or a mini-burger than consider me Wile E. Coyote, ain’t no way!

Jason carefully sliced one of these suckers open only to reveal a river of hot burger juice running down the patty and soaking the bun. I wasn’t sure if I needed a 2nd napkin or a set of paddles!! Served on a brioche, this mixed steak meat burger was a divination from the 5th dimension. As a testament to the bread of choice here, it held together even soaked through and through. The crispy onions, which one may think weren’t needed, turned this from a sandwich to a full course. I would argue that they were an absolute necessity in the overall taste results of this burger. The patty was just fantastic. In fact calling it a burger is like calling a house an umbrella, yes it keeps you dry in the rain but it’s so much more. I absolutely loved it.

In the end, I am well aware that we were treated to something special. You can scream journalistic integrity all you want and say that of course it was good, they took special care of us. Maybe they did but what if this is how they treat all of their customers? What if the burgers are really as good as I described? If they are not, the word will get out and you can point your fingers all you like. In the meantime, if Kylene had invited you, you damn well know you would’ve been there!! On serious tip, these are some really specialized, gourmet burgers and far from run of the mill. I can’t wait to go back and try them without them knowing it’s “Rev from Burger Conquest.”

Big Daddy’s Diner – Pretty In Pink

Big Daddy’s Diner
http://www.bigdaddysnyc.com/
239 Park Avenue South
New York, NY 10003-1403

THE STORY
My friends Tim and Chris from Blood Company were in town with their bands Norma Jean and HORSE the Band and wanted to meet up with burger conquester Leo and I, as well as Rich Hall from 1000 Knives for a pre-show meal. Rich says “I can eat a burger” and I think you know where the story goes from here.

As the show was in the Gramercy section of Manhattan, I naturally chose the Gramercy Park location of Big Daddy’s Diner for our burger conquesting pleasures.

Big Daddy’s is a kitschy 80’s themed diner with a wide array of food choices but a focus on burgers, tots, milk shakes and similar fare. Inside you will find a brightly restaurant with lots of stainless steel along with toys and decorations from popular 80s entertainment. It’s a fun vibe and cool theme for a diner. Who isn’t going to get excited when you’re surrounded by Indiana Jones, KISS, Atari, The Monkees, Tron, Pac-Man, Hawaiian Punch and so on. Oddly enough, no logo from popular 80s video game “Burger Time!” [Click to play]

THE BURGER
All the burgers come served on fresh brioche bun and a side of cole slaw and pickles. You also get your choice of french fries or tater tots and if you know what’s good for you, you get tots! While I was severely tempted by the “Daddy-O” burger with jalapeno jack, thick cut bacon & crispy onions and the “Dude” Burger with thick crispy bacon, caramelized onions, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes, and special maytag bleu cheese dressing, I went old school; “All American Burger 102,” a half-pound burger with cheddar and lettuce.

The brioche was crispy and added a nice sweet balance to the saltiness of the meal as well as holding form around a greasy burger. I love it when a burger spot realizes the importance of a bun. Not that I am against the standard white squishy bun, but sometimes the burger calls for more! The lettuce leaf was so large that I thought the burger might use it as wings and fly off of my plate. (Do burgers migrate south for the winter?) The quality cheese and the nice tasting and beef added together for a nice overall burger experience.  Points to Big Daddy’s for serving my burger as ordered, medium rare. It’s so “Pretty In Pink”! (See what I did there?)

While Big Daddy’s Diner seems to be off the Burgeratti radar, I walked in with no expectations and ended up with a pretty decent and juicy burger. My one issue, and it’s a BIG ONE, cold tots. Way to ruin my favorite burger companion. If you are going to check out Big Daddy’s Diner, be sure to sign up for their “Insider’s Club” first. Much like we did, you will get 15% off your entire bill!

HB Burger – Let’s Try That Again

HB Burger
http://www.heartlandbrewery.com/HB_Burger.php
127 West 43rd Street
New York, NY 10036

THE STORY
While out all day looking at new apartments, my wife Cara looks at me and says “I’m hungry and I’m craving a burger. Let’s go somewhere you haven’t been yet.” For me, that is the equivalent of Commissioner Gordon turning on the Bat-Signal. Ever since I read Nick Solares from The Beef Aficionado‘s review on A Hamburger Today, I wanted to try out HB Burger. Thank you Cara for giving me the excuse.

HB is a division of the Heartland Brewery, NYC’s first American style brewpub. They offer all of the Heartland Brewery’s standard brews and their seasonal ones as well. The place has the same pub feel as Heartland with wood every where, exposed brick, vintage beer paraphernalia and your choice of stools at the bar or tables. We opted for the formality of table service until we had been seated for 15 minutes without so much as a drive by from a waitress. Sure enough, as soon as we picked up our bags and coats to move to the bar, a member of the wait staff came over. We moved anyway. Within only a few moments the bartender had drinks in front of us and taken our food order. I have to give him massive kudos for being one of the most attentive and friendly bartenders I have ever seen in NYC.

The menu at HB Burger is a smattering of assorted burgers with veggie, tuna, turkey and even bison patty choices. There are also a number of interested specialty burgers, ranging from kobe to buffalo style, crab cake and fried chicken. Me, I went right for the “HB Burger.” “HB beef is supplied by a local, family-owned steak purveyor. Our custom blend from prime angus steers includes cuts of flank, chuck, and prime rib. Served with chopped lettuce and tomato.” I topped it with cheddar and sautéed onions while asking it to be placed on a whole wheat bun. Sounds good, don’t it!??!? We decided to share the tater tots made with smoked slab bacon and jalapeño jack cheese. Sounds ever better.

THE BURGER
Nick’s mouth watering review biting at the back of my brain had me practically drooling when the burger showed up in front of me. I opened the bun to inspect and add some mustard only to discover a bonus item; mushrooms. BLECCHHH!! I have a rule about ‘shrooms; I don’t eat what I can grow between my toes. NO FUNGUS. I pointed it out to the server who quickly put in an order for another burger.

I shifted my focus to the tater tots. Tater tots have a certain shape, crunch and flavor and are one of the most specific items available on a menu. Once you deviate from the standard tot, it’s hard to continue to use that description. Such is the case with the HB Burger tots. These were more like flash fried mashed potato puffs than said title. Based on the description, I expected them to be bacony and spicy and although, they were neither. Took a heavy dose of ketchup to moisten these salty little numbers up.

After a few tots made the adventure down my throat, a new burger arrived, this time exactly as as ordered. I was SO hungry that I had to remind myself to go slow before devouring this in one shark attack like bite. First bite; nice bun, very juicy patty, nice flavor in the beef and good sautéed onions. I bit back for a 2nd bite, really focused on tasting every intricate flavor. The beef had a juiciness unique to this burger. The beef itself had more of a grass fed flavor which was really complimented by the salty cheddar cheese.

The bottom of the bun had no chances of survival in fighting the juiciness of the burger. I had serious trouble getting my standard “left hand grab” photos without the burger oozing out everywhere. The flavor was so good that I considered a 2nd burger and not because I was hungry, but more so because I wanted more time to savor the flavor. It will have to wait for next time and there will definitely be a next time!

THE BEVERAGES
As a beer advocate and blogger (see One Barrel Bar site) I thought you might appreciate hearing about the brews I tried.

Bavarian Black Lager
This is known as a “Schwarzbier” which in a direct translation from German means “Black beer.” At 6.50 ABV, this mild, porter-like brew had a nutty flavor with a hint of caramel. It’s not too strong and not too thick, which is actually what I would prefer. However, for a restaurant serving the Times Square crowd, playing it safe and mild is the smart way to go.

Old Red Nose Ale
This dark red / mahogany has a 5.75% ABV and has a hint of spiciness that one would expect from a winter brew. It has a strong flavor and a long finish. Probably one of my favorite of Heartland’s offerings but it’s only available in November and December.

Spicy Ginger Ale
Heartland, along with their beer, offer up home made sodas. The wife, not really a fan of beer, decided to try to Spicy Ginger Ale. While she mixed it with a shot of Crown Royal for a little holiday afternoon cheer its overt spicy ginger appeal makes it good on it’s own. The soda is closer in flavor to a ginger beer than regular old ginger ale and I bet it would be amazing heated up on a cold winter’s day.

Old Town Bar – Who You Callin’ A Turkey??!?

Old Town Bar
http://www.oldtownbar.com/
45 E 18th St
New York, NY 10003-2003

THE STORY
Boasting more than 100 years of service, Old Town Bar was once presented a “Golden Local” award by NBC for being the “Best Old Bar” in NYC. Built in 1892, the Old Town Bar served as a speak easy named “Tammany Hall” during Prohibition and since has been made famous by many “moving pictures.” But we’ve told you this story before

I wasn’t all that impressed with the burger and I had not planned on returning for a burger. However when my business partners Mark and John, chose it as our preRoadrunner Records Holiday party meeting location, the chances became more likely.

THE BURGER
After skimming the menu, I decided to get a try out their turkey burger with American cheese and roasted onions. Old Town claims the burger is made with their “blend of onions and herbs” and that sounded pretty good to me. The burger comes on a nice and sturdy but not hard sesame seed roll that amply fits the burger with out overpowering. The spice blend was subtle but definitely made the difference in the taste here. The burger was absolutely covered in American cheese which actually worked to accompany nicely. The roasted onions were sweet in nature and made for a nice compliment to the overall sandwich. Next time I go back, I am getting this again.

Best Burgers and Shakes – I Can Haz Cheese Burger Delivery

Best Burgers and Shakes
http://www.yelp.com/biz/best-burgers-and-shakes-new-york
416 West 46th Street
New York, NY 10036

THE STORY
After my discharge from the hospital from an infected cat bite, I needed a day at home to rest and re-charge. More importantly I needed to help nurse and watch over our cat Kc who had suffered his own injuries. While I sat on the couch catching up on some work, I started to get hungry. After spending 4 days eating hospital food, I thought I deserved a treat and so did the cat. To others this may mean a cookie, ice cream, pizza, or tacos, but not me. This means a BURGER!! I grabbed something you’ll find in every New Yorker’s apartment, the menu box and started flipping through my delivery choices.

2 menus in, I landed on Best Burgers and Shakes, a brand new burger joint in my neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen. With little knowledge of the place, I decided to place an order. It should also be noted that this makes a milestone for Burger Conquest. Our first ever delivery review!

THE BURGER
The Burgers were only $6.50, which is about the same price as a Shake Shack Burger. I always eat 2 when there so using that knowledge, I ordered 2 burgers: 1. just the basics; cheddar cheese, lettuce and onion. 2. American and cheddar cheese, fried egg, bacon, lettuce, onion and Cajun sauce. Both of which were ordered medium rare.

When the order arrived, I couldn’t believe the size of the burgers. Here I was expecting 2 small to average size burgers but these suckers were huge! I thought maybe my percocet induced haze was causing my vision to fail but no, these burgers were made from whopping 8.5 ounce patties. Clearly, I had ordered more than I could chew. Thank god I had a little buddy to help me out.

I started with the basic cheese burger. Served on a soft sesame seed bun, it was moist, juicy and had salty yet slight and oh-so-subtle sweet flavor to the meat. The patty was made in the back yard / old-school pub fashion from ground beef and over cooked. It held together through out the sandwich, including the bun. Halfway through, I moved onto the concoction burger. The produce toppings were fresh and crisp. The 2 cheeses blended together so very nicely. The bacon was crispy and bursting with smokey saltiness. The egg was cooked just right and the yolk oozed all over the place. The Cajun spices were used in such a sparing manner that they merely accented the flavors of the burger rather than overwhelm them.

The fries were awesome! Made from whole sliced potatoes, with the skin still on, they were fried just the right amount. For a delivery burger, the food was great and it came fast and hot. I was really impressed and must go back again for another visit, but this time, directly to the location.

*No animals were harmed in the events that surround this post (other than the ones eaten). Also, no animals were actually fed any of the email. However they may have been taunted and teased for the sake of photo graphical comedy and they may have also been offered some of the cheese from the burger, which they smelled and licked, but did not eat.

Thank you
-Management

St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital – Just What the Doctor Ordered

St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital
http://www.slred.org/
1000 10th Ave
New York, NY 10019-1192

THE STORY
Over the weekend, my wife and I saved our cat, Kc, from fighting with a dog. This cat is the most docile, friendly, snugly, kind, non-violent cat ever. Kc has never bitten or scratched anyone and he had to have been truly frightened and threatened to mistakenly attack us.

I checked into the emergency room to have my wounds looked at and unfortunately the punctures has become swollen and severely infected. The situation was so bad in fact, that the hospital wanted to admit me immediately to keep me under 24 hour watch and several infusions of IV antibiotics a day. I wont go into details about the wounds, infection or procedures here but you can check out the photos on facebook if you’re curious.

On my 3rd day in the hospital, guess what magically showed up on my lunch tray!??!?!

THE BURGER
There would be nothing more random and awesome than a delicious, gourmet-style burger review to come out of this situation. But we should be honest, this is hospital food, not a Hollywood film. It was an over cooked frozen patty on a white bun with a slice of mass produced American cheese that by the time it got to me was room temperature at best.

What I will tell you is that the burger was not supposed to come with cheese or mustard, but I requested and they delivered. The veggies and potatoes were the same temperature and bland in flavor. The chicken noodle soup on the other hand was pretty good. Thick, rich, loaded with ingredients and not too salty. Maybe Mom was right about eating chicken soup when you’re illin’?!?!?

The really fun part of the story happened with the menu. Printed in bold, right at the bottom, were the words “the food served to you has been specially chosen by your doctor to suit your medical needs.” Yeah doc! That’s right, my needs require burgers and I say bless your Hippocratic Oath and all of it’s highly held values for doing what was right for me.

Island Burgers and Shakes – Infatuated With Burgers.

Island Burgers & Shakes
http://www.islandburgersandshakes.com
766 9th Ave
New York, NY 10019

THE STORY
When we first started our “Glorious Pursuit of Delicious Burgers” we needed suggestions. So I did what any net savvy blogger would do, I Googled “Best Burger NYC.” After plowing through a multitude of mouth watering reviews and opinions, I landed on The Citysearch Best 2008 Burger list. That became our guidebook when in need of a new Burger Conquest location.

Having visited every place on the list save Pop Burger (I just can’t stand the idea of eating a burger in a club in the meat-packing district while 20 somethings / bridge and tunnelers upload pictures of themselves being “cute” on to Last Night’s Party), but the heralded Island Burgers & Shakes. This was a very difficult task considering it’s popularity and its 3 blocks from my apartment location but I wanted to save it for a special occasion.

Enter Immaculate Infatuation. This site jumped onto the NYC food scene around the same time as we did and it’s run by Chris Stang and my friend Andrew Steinthal. I’ve known Andrew for years as in our day jobs, we both work in the music business but I had no inkling of his foodie magnitude until he started the blog. The connection gets tighter; Team Burger member Nona* works with Andrew and demanded we have an Immaculate Infatuation Burger Conquest. Done.

Located in the food popular Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, Island Burgers & Shakes don’t serve up your average burger. In fact, don’t let their name mislead you, the place is more popular for the chicken Churascos more than their burgers. The menu is a mind-numbing, mile-long list of toppings, preparations and creations that will have your head spinning.

I order the Churascos here all the time and I am pretty sure I have eaten nearly EVERYTHING on the menu. My 3 faves are #1. The “Roma;” Thyme, rosemary, garlic, oregano and pepper flakes, #2 The “Crescent City;” Blackened, bayou mayo and onion on sourdough, and #3. “Here’s Gianni;” Parmesan spread, bacon and roasted peppers on a cibatta. But…I have NEVER eaten a burger here. The place is pretty damn small so unless you want to wait in a long line to get in, go mid-afternoon.

THE BURGER
Given the choice, I like a burger with just cheese, lettuce and onions. No fancy stuffing’s, coverings, smothering’s, cooking’s, spices and so forth are necessary. I do like and appreciate all of that but you can’t deny the joy of simplicity in burger preparation. However on this day, that just wasn’t going to do it so I ordered the “Barzel’s” burger: Blackened, jack, bacon and horseradish on a ciabatta.

Jackie and Nona* went for something a little more traditional and after politely asking not to hate him if he did NOT get a burger, Andrew ordered a Churasco “Bourbon Street” style: Blackened , bacon, jack, bayou mayo and onion on sourdough. I can’t blame him, they’re amazing!

We started with an order of the very creamy and spicy guacamole and chips. They were damn good but I refrained from digging in too deeply. The huge freshly ground patty looked slightly dwarfed by the gigantic ciabatta but I didn’t care, this whole mamma-jamma was going down. Before I even took my first bite, the happy juices began to pour out of the sandwich onto my plate. I knew some delicious dipping was in the future for this bad boy.

The spices just dominate this burger like the Great White does the shores of a small New England town. I really had to focus in my palette to taste the beef itself and by focus, I mean take a bite of Nona*’s burger! It was so good. The half-pound patties are made of specialty-blended prime beef and have that old-school back yard burger like appeal. Unfortunately mine was overcooked but thankfully both and Nona*’s and Jackie’s was not, so I got to try it 2 ways. The Blackened spices are great, the horseradish is excellent, the bacon is crispy and oh so good and the jack cheese is real solid but the combo of all on top of a delicious burger is an experience like none other.

The crazy concoctions make this place unique but the already delicious burger doesn’t really need them. Either way, you won’t be let down by the burger.

Dorian’s Red Hand – A Killer’s Burger

Dorian’s
http://www.dorrians-nyc.com/
1616 2nd Avenue
New York, NY 10028

THE STORY
As if 3 hours of Wing-Off wasn’t enough, we wanted to keep drinking so Mark lead us to a neighborhood haunt, literally. Nick named “the Red Hand,” legend tells the story of a man who loved Ulster, Ireland so much that he cut off his hand to become king. The Red Hand can be found on the flag of Northern Ireland as well as many other places of dignity. But that probably isn’t why the name of this Upper East Side pub / restaurant rings your bells. In 1986, Robert Chambers Jr. murdered an 18 year old girl, Jennifer Levin, that he had met in the bar, thus earning him the nickname “Preppie Killer.”

THE BURGER
I actually had no plan to eat but when the waitress told us that the Dorian’s “World-Famous” Burgers were made fresh, served on English Muffins (MY FAVE!) and the best she ever had, we ordered some to split for the table. I got the “Red Hand” with Smoked Ham, Cheddar Cheese and Grilled Onions. Russel T. went for the house specialty; the “Ragin’ Cajun” served Cajun-Spiced, topped with Pepper Jack Cheese, Jalapeno Relish, served with a side of Cool Ranch Dressing.

I love burgers like this. Nothing like that old-school, backyard bbq, father made, pub-style burger. Big, juicy, fresh and with a natural beef flavor. It’s the burger my childhood is based around. The English Muffin only option for bread scores huge points with me. The burger was over cooked and there were too many Grilled Onions but those are 2 problems easily rectified. Other than the history of manslaughter, the story to tell about Dorian’s is the “Ragin’ Cajun!” Not at all what I expected, this burger with it’s toppings tasted more like a gyro or shawarma then a regular old pub burger. The Pepper Jack Cheese, the Cajun Spices and the delicious Jalapeno Relish mounted a fantastic spicy battle against the cooling taste of the Ranch Dressing. I was really impressed. Even as I write this, I want to go back for another, hold the murderers.

WING-OFF is a charity event to benefit cancer research! All participants are required to donate money to join in Wing-Off. All donations from this event will be going to Sean McGrath Fund. “The Sean McGrath Fund was created in memory of the late musician (Saves The Day, Mouthpiece, Hands Tied), whose two-year battle with cancer ended in 2004. Through the Princeton Area Community Foundation, our Fund’s mission is to financially assist a wide variety of causes reflecting Sean’s life, relating to music, compassion, and health issues including cancer.”

On this event in particular, the gentlemen of Wing-Off raised $130 in donation. If you would like to donate you can do so directly or through Burger Conquest by click the link on the right side bar.

And now, the WINGS!

BAR COASTAL

Bar-Coastal is one of the original Atomic Wings licensees in NYC.Atomic Wings is a chain located in NYC that imports their chicken directly from Buffalo, NY and claims to serve them in the authentic buffalo wing way. Most of them are stand alone, but Bar-Coastal, much like Down the Hatch (inspiration for the first ever Wing-Off), serves them in their bar.

Jason (the man behind Bar-Coastal) and his staff, definitely get an A+ for treatment as they rolled out the red hot carpet for the Wing-Off crew. Holding us a few private tables, made it a lot easier for us to sample different wings, compare notes amongst ourselves, talk with Jason and in general, have a great time all while sampling a great beer menu.

Serving up Medium, Nuclear, Jerk BBQ and the off-menu special, Kerry’s Way (a mix of honey mustard, bbq and traditional buffalo sauces). All of the wings were cooked perfectly; Nuclear (Hot) and crispy. Kerry’s Way had a nice spicy meets sweet mix. The crowd fave were the Jerk BBQ, which had a smoked black pepper accent, but for official Wing-Off blessings, we only judge on Hot and Medium. Both of which were hot, full of flavor, meaty, juicy, buttery, crispy and made just the way we like them.

BROTHER JIMMY’S BBQ

Up next, the NYC based “Southern Style” BBQ restaurant chain, Brother Jimmy’s BBQ. Claiming themselves as the “home away from home for the A.C.C. alumni.” The A.C.C. is a Division 1 conference in the NCAA. Offering several different locations, each with different themes, we hit the original on 2nd Ave. Brother Jimmy’s specializes in BBQ, especially Carolina style but also serves up some well known hot wings.

Our friendly and upbeat server Brooke, showed us to 3 tables in the back (always good to move us away from the others!) and promptly took our wing and beer order. Their wings come one of 2 ways, Chipotle or Buffalo (medium) and we ordered 1 bucket of the latter for each table. For the sauce oriented, BJ’s offers 6 additional sauces that come on the table, each in their own bottle. Be careful picking them up as they are not capped and will easily squirt “Blazin'” sauce 2 feet in the air before landing on what was a clean pair of jeans.

The wings came quickly and accompanied by a large bowl of blue cheese, a “vat” if you will. Any real wing lover, loves to dip and there is nothing more frustrating than a tiny receptacle of blue cheese that runs dry faster than a rain puddle in a desert and acts like an awkward first date, only accepting the “tip.”

The wings were crispy, served hot, and had a decent flavor. Spice-wise, these wings don’t have much to offer. There is some nice flavor but “hot” these are not. Acting like Bob Ross, I created an easel of the sauces on my plate to paint happy little wings with. They were all decent, but nothing stood out. All in all, some good middle of the road wings but if you want spicy or uniquely flavored, move along little doggy.

After plowing through our wings, Brooke brought out 3 “Fish bowls,” 1 for each table. This is a massive fruity mixed alcoholic beverage literally served in a fish bowl with a multitude of straws, usually intended for speed drinking. Since the premise of a Wing-Off is a challenge from the get go, we had no problem accepting Brooke’s idea of the tables racing. My table won!

Well Brooke, you wanted to make the blog and you did. Hope you’re happy.

THE BACK PAGE SPORTS BAR

Generally a Wing-Off is between 2 locations only and even though eating at 3 different wing places sounds “awesome,” believe me, the 3rd one is difficult, even if it’s the beloved Lansdowne Road. It is tough to organize these things and with The Back Page Sports Bar not only having a reputation for great wings but only a few blocks away, we had to do the right wing. (See what I did there?!?!)

The restaurant was kind of empty which seemed a little odd for an Upper East Side Sports bar on a college football game day but hey, all the better for the Wing-Off crew. While the place was kind of vibe-less and sterile, the wait staff were attentive and quick. With no delay, we ordered up some Medium and Hot Wings as well as a round of beers.

The wings were good. Right amount of meat, right temperature, juicy, buttery, peppered and with a an appropriate amount of heat. This is a decent wing. We tore through them really quickly and placed an order of Extra Hot wings. They arrived without much delay and despite everyone feeling bloated and full, we tore through them. Same wings, but honestly, not that much hotter.

5 Guys Burgers and Fries – Free Stuff and the Truth About Taylor Swift

Five Guys Burgers and Fries
http://fiveguys.com/
284 7th Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11215

THE STORY
In 1986, the first Five Guys opened in Arlington, VA and in November of 2009 they now have 450 locations in 30 different US States. They use fresh, never frozen beef, slice all their own potatoes for french fries and serve food with zero trans fats, zero glutens (except in the buns). All burger orders come with 2 patties (unless you order a “little” which has only one) and is cooked to medium well to “insure a consistent product.” Each location serve free, fresh roasted peanuts from a barrel. It’s not a unique concept, but it’s a damn good one.

I was recently talking with my pal Jed, one of the owners of MusicSkins. Essentially, they make branded stickers that cover your devices (*see more below.) Jed is a huge foodie as well although his focus is fried chicken. When I showed him Burger Conquest, he freaked out and said he wanted to make us some MusicSkins in return for eating a burger with us. I said I would do one better, so Jackie and I headed out to the 5 Guys in Park Slope near Jed’s offices.

THE BURGER
We’ve reviewed the burger at 5 Guys before, (it’s really good, fresh, with lots of options for toppings and the fresh cut fries are awesome, especially with Cajun spices) so let’s get to what this is really about…FREE STUFF!!

WHO WANTS A LIMITED EDITION BURGER CONQUEST MUSIC SKIN!?!?
They come courtesy of MusicSkins, exclusively to Burger Conquest readers. First come first serve until they are gone. Just send me an email with your mailing address and which device you have from this list and I will send you one! beeftouchdown@burgerconquest.com
