7 Bucks – NYC’s First Ever Comic Crawl

7 Bucks App
NYC’s First Comic Crawl

THE CONQUEST
There’s no end to the amount of cool things you can do in NYC. With so many great local merchants, creative people and businesses, there is something to suit any interest, every day, all day. Especially if that suit is skin tight, colorful has a symbol on the chest, a cape attached and boots. The folks at 7 Bucks app took their love for local business and comic books & combined them to create the kind of dastardly adventure that the likes of New York City has never seen before; NYC’s First Ever Comic Crawl.

7 Bucks is a free iPhone app that geo-targets you with cool things you can do near you for, you guessed it super sleuth, $7. Local businesses post attractive $7 offers, and users of 7 bucks can see a menu of what they can get, do, or taste nearby, always for just 7 bucks. On Saturday, October 13, 2021, while the NYC Comic Con was in town, armed with only your 7 Bucks app to protect you, you were able to walk around the East Village and unlock $7 offers that also all came with vintage Marvel Comic Books. It made for a very fun afternoon, walking around the East Village with friends and checking great local businesses.

Here’s a sampling of some of the cool stuff offered, all of which came with vintage Marvel Comic Books!

A small Kings County Mac ‘N Cheese and a Pint of Yuengling from East Village Tavern:

A Draft Beer and a Tiki Mug to take home from Otto’s Shrunken Head:

2 Miller Light 16oz Drafts and 2 Kamikaze Shots from Professor Thom’s:

Greenmarket Pretzels and an American Craft Beer from Jimmy’s No. 43:

A Salted Caramel and Ferrero Roche Gelato with a Double Shot of Espresso from Fresco Gelateria (This was AMAZING!):

Your choice of a 1 Jalapeno Margarita or 2 incredibly delicious (trust me on this) Grass Fed Pat LaFrieda Beef Sliders with Poco’s 3 Cheese Blend from Poco:

Not 1, but 2 – 16 ounce Hurricanes from Billy Hurricane’s:

A pint of limited edition Brooklyn Brewery Defender (made in conjunction with the NYC Comic Con) from Idle Hands Bar and an order of Bacon Spiced Tater Tots from That Burger:

Although NYC’s First Ever Comic Crawl has come and gone, the 7 Bucks App is live and kicking & filled with great stuff you can do & get for 7 Bucks in NYC!

That Burger at Idle Hands Bar – A High Rating From The Burger Club

THE CONQUEST
Back in August, I received the high honor of being invited to become a member of the “The Burger Club.” This group of Burger enthusiasts gather several times a year with the intent of doing one thing, eating Burgers. With more than 60 members, they have met up over one of my favorite sandwiches more than 30 times. The process is simple, meet up, say hello, induct new members, traditional shot of Jameson Whisky, eat Burgers and then discuss your rating of the Burger with the group. I was inducted at Amity Hall while eating Stuffed Burgers under my new Burger Club name, “The Sizzler.”

When it came to meet up again, we had planned to eat my favorite Burger of all times, Rub BBQ but due to a some jerkwad crashing a car through their front window, the restaurant was closed. A last minute plan went into action and the meeting was moved to my bar, Idle Hands, in the East Village where food is serviced by the amazing That Burger. It’s located upstairs from Idle Hands, inside of Billy Hurricane’s but you can order food to either bar. That Burger uses a secret blend of LaFrieda Beef, fresh produce and only Potato Rolls to serve their Burgers.

THE BURGER
The Burgers are freaking awesome and I will not rate them on this site to preserve a little journalistic integrity. But if you want to know how I feel about the Burgers, know that I actively write one of the top Burger sites in the world and personally asked Dan from That Burger to close his tent and move into our bars. Let that speak for itself.

I will tell you this, of all the Burgers served by That Burger, my favorite is “The Blues.” It comes topped with Sauteed Onions, Sauteed Jalapenos & Blue Cheese Crumble. The heat, sweet & savory really come together in this one and it’s quite popular. But seeing as how I can’t rate this Burger, that doesn’t mean The Burger Club can’t!

BV’s Burger – The Best Steakhouse Burger in NYC, IF You Can Find It

BV’s Burger at Bobby Vans Steakhouse
http://bobbyvans.com/Bobby_Vans_Steakhouse/BV_Burger.html
120 W. 45th Street, Courtyard
New York, NY 10036

THE CONQUEST
You know that feeling of excitement you get when you uncover Eggs on an Easter Egg hunt, or finding quarters in the return bin of a soda machine or unlocking the feature that allows you to watch “Memento” in chronological order? It’s exhilarating and gets your heart racing. You can’t wait to do it again. The art of the treasure hunt reaches a deep part of our psyche that explodes when we hit the discovery moment. Couple that with finding awesome food and really, at some deep level, isn’t that what this blog is supposed to do?

Bobby Van’s Steakhouse. With 5 locations, it’s practically a NYC institution. If you want a classy environment without the need for opulence and a hearty, hearty meal centered around a a succulent, properly cooked, piece of Beef in the form of a Steak, put your money on Bobby Vans. It’s not cheap but it’s damn good and that’s the reason it’s on top of a lot of “best Steak in NYC” lists. It would stand to reason that a place with such high end cuts of Beef has a good Burger and they definitely do but it will set you back, at a minimum, $17 and served in a formal dining setting. If you’re looking for an affordable, fresh and inexpensive lunch, you are not walking into Bobby Vans. But now, you can walk BEHIND IT and get one of the best Steak Burgers in NYC for only $6.

WHAT?

YES, you read that right. Walk yourself into Times Square, turn onto 45th St, pass by Bobby Vans and turn down the alley next to the restaurant. All the way at the back of the alley you will find a set of glass doors. That’s BV’s Burger, a small, walk-up counter selling one thing, Burgers. Tasty, delicious, juicy Burgers cut from Steaks. BV’s Burgers is a 100% “in-the-know” restaurant.

THE BURGER
I’d heard rumors about this Burger and I certainly have no problem paying large sums of money for a tasty Burg. But, in general, I like to maintain the belief that the best Food items in the world cost less than 10 bucks. So for me, a Steakhouse Burger is something I rarely, rarely get because of the high sticker price.  Moreover, if I am in a Steakhouse, I am there because I want a Steak! Knowing how good the food is at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse, this one had to be tested out but don’t make the mistake I did, don’t go after lunch, they aren’t open.

There’s no seats as it’s just a counter but the adjoining court yard has lots of tables and who doesn’t want to sit outside on a nice day to eat lunch? The Burger is 1/2 LB sirloin patty, served on a large, white Sesame Seed Bun. It  comes with Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles and Ketchup. You can also add Mayo, Mustard & Chopped Onions for free or do a pay upgrade to include Sauteed Onions, Guacamole, Grilled Mushrooms, Bacon or Chili. The Burger has an amazing char grill flavor, just like Dad used to do in the backyard. The difference, he was NOT cutting his Ground Beef from Steaks!! It was cooked to a perfect Medium Rare and with a great melt on the Cheese. The patty is loosely packed and gives a soft, juicy and flavorful bite. It’s good, SO GOOD!

There’s a fast causal Cheeseburger located in the busiest, most overrun, touristy, corporate chain filled neighborhood in NYC, at the back of an alley and it’s only $6.50. That shining Beefy diamond is called BV’s Burger and it’s the best Steakhouse Burger in NYC.

I proudly welcome BV’s Burger to the OFFICIAL Burger Conquest TOP BURGERS IN NYC list!

New York Food and Wine Festival Blue Moon Burger Bash 2012 – Winners Announced

The Food Network NY Wine & Food Festival Blue Moon Burger Bash presented by Pat LaFrieda Meats, hosted by Rachel Ray. Winners announced!

In the U.S. Army there are a lot of commissioned officer titles. You have Lieutenants, Captains, Majors, Colonels and Majors. They’re all very important but none of them are more important than the General. From Private to Corporal to Sergeant and all the way up the Officer Ranks, they all take orders from their military Mack-Daddy, the General. In the world of Burger Events, The Food Network NY Wine & Food Festival Blue Moon Burger Bash is the General. No one does it bigger. No one does it better and no one raises as much money as they do for the Food Bank For New York City. 100% of the proceeds from not only the grand stand Burger Bash event but the entire festival go to support this awesome charity.

It happens once a year, every October as the entire city is taken over by the dozens and dozens of events that happen all over the city during the Festival. But none of them are as heralded, anticipated or more talked about than the Burger Bash. In fact, you could say that it’s the General of it’s own Army as well. It’s presented by the Jay-Z of meats, New York’s own Pat Lafrieda. Attendees are guaranteed a great time with great Burgers from great Chefs and restaurants using great Meats. This year the event moved into Manhattan into the patio at Basket Ball City as the South Street Seaport. This allowed them to expand the event up to 3000, hungry and excited attendees including yours truly.

It’s the one day a year I truly go from being  Burger Famous to Burger Royalty.

The Burger Bash, in its extended capacity this year brought a whopping total of 28 different Burgers from various Chefs and Restaurants. Even with the full 3 hours of time, it takes some hardcore dedication to eat all 28. I only had 60 minutes of time myself so some personal guidelines had to be established:

  • No more than 2 bites per Burger
  • Pass on any Burger that has won the Bash before
  • Try to eat only Burgers I haven’t had before
  • Minimal Chit Chat
  • No time for note taking

The last one proved to be the most difficult but it was definitely the biggest time saver. It seems weird to not be taking notes or writing full reviews of Burgers because that’s pretty much what this site is about. So to simplify, every Burger I ate is rated into 1 of 3 categories:

  • SWIM!: I would swim across any body of shark infested and toxic-waste polluted water wearing only chain mail and ballerina slippers to eat this Burger.
  • ‘HOOD: I would consider eating this again if I happened to be in the same neighborhood.
  • NICKEL: The Nickelback of Burgers, a lot of people like this but me, not so much.

With that and only 60 minutes, I was able to try 15 of the 28 Burgers. Let’s start with my top 4 (in alphabetical order.)

Schnipper’s
I LOVE the Schnipper’s. Their Burger is one of the Best Burgers in NYC. I did not eat one at the Bash but I am sure it was excellent. However, I would love to give them a special mention here for bringing one of the items I enjoyed the most at the Burger Bash: Hot Apple Cider! Not only was it perfect for the chilly night on the pier but it was delicious!!! You guys deserve some kind of award for the Cider!!

About the Food Bank For New York City
Three million New Yorkers have difficulty affording food.  The Food Bank For New York City is there with a solution.  The Food Bank helps by offering a meal today, resources for a more secure tomorrow and nutrition education to help them lead healthy lifestyles.  Food Bank For New York City is the only hunger-relief organization to take this integrated approach.  The Food Bank tackles the issues of hunger on three fronts: food distribution, through soup kitchens and food pantries; income support, by connecting those in need to benefits available to them, such as food stamps and earned income tax credits; and nutrition education, helping individuals and families make healthful food choices on limited budgets.  Get more information at foodbanknyc.org.

Major thanks again to Robin Insley & Associates for the pass into the festival. I truly appreciate your Burger generosity.

Special thanks to Phil Aguas from Manhattan Beer Distributors for giving me his pen for which to take notes. Without that, this post would’ve not been possible:

The Burger Bistro – Devo’s Favorite Kangaroo Burger

The Burger Bistro

177 5th Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11217

THE CONQUEST
Freedom of Choice is a very import Act that “declares that it is the policy of the United States that every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child; terminate a pregnancy prior to fetal viability; or terminate a pregnancy after viability when necessary to protect her life or her health.” It’s also a very popular album from the band Devo which had their biggest hit, “Whip It.” Beyond that, Freedom of Choice is a concept on which America thrives, the ability to have as many choices as you could possibly imagine.

Freedom of Choice is a principal by which The Burger Bistro of Brooklyn operates. Their menu has so many choices of Appetizers, Proteins, Toppings, Cheeses, Rolls, Sauces, Sides and Desserts that it will make your stomach do flip flops. The Burger Bistro gives you so many choices in fact that unless you really know what you want, you could spend hours just dreaming up tasty combinations. It’s all priced to order so sit back in this small, modern looking establishment, grab a menu & a pencil and start to combinize (a word created specifically for this review) up yourself a Burger the most suits the choices that will make your day in the Burgerverse a happy one. Feeling a little intimidated? Check out the gallery of Burger Porn on their to get some ideas before your visit. Stop on in for lunch on a weekday and a Burger will only cost $10!

THE BURGER
I popped by Park Slope’s Burger Bistro for a quick lunch while working in Brooklyn one day. It wasn’t too busy so I was seated immediately and begun perusing my options on the menu. After much deliberation, I came up with the following combo:

  • Beef Patty cooked  Medium Rare
  • Smoked Gouda
  • Frizzled Onions
  • Lettuce
  • Wheat Bun
  • Side of Greens

I could’ve gotten way crazy and certainly have but figured I would rather try the Appetizer of Deep Fried Corn than just continue to stock pile on top of my Burger. Deep Fried Corn? Who doesn’t want to try that? Honestly though, you could deep fry a shoe and I would at least try a bite. Word of warning, it’s served UBER HOT. Be sure to let it cool before attacking with your chompers. The Corn has a nice Garlic-Salt seasoning that really plays out nicely against its natural sweetness. The Sauce, which was very tangy and good, was perhaps unnecessary. I liked it but would suggest it as a dipping Sauce for Fries or Onion Rings and instead just top the Corn with Butter or Olive Oil. It was great either way.

Kudos to The Burger Bistro as my Patty was spot on Medium Rare and brought a smile to my face. I took one bite and the first thing I thought; great call on the Frizzled Onions. It’s good to be a Burger-Genius. Not only did they taste great but they brought an awesome crunch into the middle of the Sandwich. But that’s not where my Burger construction know how ended. Oh yeah, there’s more.  The Smoked Gouda, oh man the Smoked Gouda was definitely the right call. As a Cheese, Gouda doesn’t really melt so it’s makes for interesting consistency that isn’t as melty as say a slice of American. What really made it work was the Smoky flavor of the Cheese! Moving down the Sandwich, the Patty was not only juicy but also very tender and loosely packed, allowing the Meat to practically melt in my mouth. Along with the all natural Beef taste, the Burger Bistro cooking process gave the Burger a little big of a smoked / char flavor. When paired up against the Cheese, it was a total win. It’s a really nice sized Burger and by example, after finishing it and the Corns, I couldn’t even attempt to eat my Greens. So much for digestive health!

If you’re looking for a Burger with lots of options or you never eat a Burger the same way twice, the Burger Bistro is the place to get tasty one the way you want it. They’ve even been known to have Donut & Kangaroo Burgers from time to time.

5th Annual Freaktoberfest – Evil Monkeys, Wicked Brews and a Fiendish Festival

5th Annual Freaktoberfest Boutique Beer and Music Festival

Greenwood Park Beer Garden
http://www.greenwoodparkbk.com
555 7th Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11215

THE CONQUEST
I’ve been to a lot of Beer festivals & I’ve hosted and produced Beer festivals. The key to standing out is to be different and have something that’s unique about your event. Something that sets is apart from the rest. Take for example 12% Imports & The Shelton Brother’sThe Festival.” From the appearance, it looked like any other Beer fest. Lots of tables, lots of Beers, lots of people tasting Beer and after Beer. But if you look at the line up of breweries, they had some of the world’s most renowned brewers on hand pouring some of the world’s highest rated Beers. That line up has literally never happened at festival before, thus creating a “you have to be there” scenario. Anyone can sample flagship Beers at their local craft Beer bar so there’s no need to put together an event where someone is offered the same Beers they can get just about anywhere.

Enter the Annual Freaktoberfest Boutique Beer and Music Festival. To have a more unique festival than this you would have to offer Unicorn Rides, cliff jumping and life sized origami along with Beers that you had to use a time machine to acquire. Freaktoberfest is brought to you by Shmaltz Brewing Company, Smuttynose Brewing, Mikey Palms and the New York City Craft Brewers Guild. Each year the venue changes but so does the Beer and the entertainment. This year the festival was hosted by Coney Island Circus Sideshow staple, Donny Vomit. Donny brought along with him a gaggle of oddities, freaks and a burlesque show. Add all this up with a sick line up some of the most rare American made Beers available in the area and stick in an outdoor beer garden along with a bunch of music acts and you have the 5th Annual Freaktoberfest Boutique Beer and Music Festival.

Freaktoberfest was far and above the most unusual, unique, ultra-fun, uplifting & unpretentious Beer festival I have ever been to. If you want to have a good laugh, taste some rare beers and enjoy a relaxing day of food, drink and entertainment, make sure you like them on Facebook so you don’t miss out on the 6th annual in 2012.

THE BURGER
Freaktoberfest was held at Greenwood Park,  a 13,00 square foot restaurant and Beer Garden in South Park Slope Brooklyn. Built out of an old gas station and boasting 60 beer tap lines, an indoor bar, an outdoor cargo bar, 3 bocce ball courts and a seasonal menu. They have DJ’s, WiFi, TV’s, cold brew coffee, specialty cocktails and even keep the outdoor Beer Garden heated in the Winter. It’s a one of a kind location in the area that truly is fit to suit all needs. Greenwood Park’s kitchen as well as their outdoor gril was open during Freaktoberfest and since the best thing to do with Craft Beer is eat food, I couldn’t resist ordering a Hamburger.

The Greenwood Park Burger is made from All-Natural Grass-Fed Beef and served on a large Potato Bun. It also comes with the standard Tomato, Pickle, Lettuce, Onion & Cheese options baut I chose to go with only the last 3. The Burger has a nice back yard grill char flavor to it which seems appropriate given the surroundings. Unfortunately my Burger was overcooked despite my asking twice if they could cook it Medium-Rare. They use Bibb Lettuce which was an interesting change from the norm. The Bun, which didn’t seem to Potato-ey to me was kind of bland and really didn’t add anything to the Sandwich. It definitely got the job done and allowed me more substance to soak up more tasty Beers. The hand cut French Fries on the other hand were most excellent. Fried up just right with enough Salt on them. I ate every single damn one of them and you bet they made me thirsty for more crafty suds.

Big ups to Pat Fondiller from Smuttynose Brewing. He is the true life blood behind Freaktoberfest and if it wasn’t for him, this super cool event wouldn’t exist. You can all thank Jeremy Cowan from Shmaltz Brewing, the other half of the Freaktoberfest team, who we can all thank for keeping Beer weird. While I’m throwing out the thanks, here’s one to Sean McCain from The Bronx Brewery and Olivia Cerio from Empire Brewing for always making me laugh, smile and appreciate the Craft Beer community.

White Burger – Properly Made Sliders For $1.50 in Brooklyn

White Burger
http://www.yelp.com/biz/white-burger-new-york
650 Manhattan Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11222

THE CONQUEST
How do you find out about new restaurants to try or Burgers you need to eat? Friends, word of mouth, Food pictures on Instagram, media outlets, TV, sky writing, smoke signals? Chances are it’s probably several of these. I do too. I also get a ton of recommendations from Burger lovers like you who read this blog and then tell me about a Burger they love. Very infrequently do I just happen upon a Burger, let a lone a Burger worth eating, tweeting, writing and reading about. But, then it happens. I was walking through Greenpoint, Brooklyn the other when I came upon a restaurant I had to walk into.

Located through the entrance of and then at the back of a Subway restaurant, you’ll find White Burger. It’s a totally separate business with it’s own counter, sign and grill but it is most certainly inside a chain fast food sandwich shop. The menu is rather interesting. They offer Burgers, $1.25, Cheeseburgers, $1.50 and Juices and Smoothies, $4.99. Whomever came up with this concept is worthy of an interview. Juices aside, once you’ve made the terribly difficult and intense decision between Cheese or no Cheese and order your Burgers, the serve will pull out the appropriate globs of fresh Ground Beef, slap them on the flat griddle and then ask you a very important question to which there is only one answer. Do you want Onions? YES! YES OF COURSE YOU WANT ONIONS. Then a few moments later, you have an appropriately made Sliders which you can dine in at one of the few small tables or take your Sliders to go.

Me? I couldn’t wait.

THE BURGER
Sliders are a lost art form in the walls of NYC (unless you go to Mark Burger). I can’t understand why because they are freaking delicious, especially when made correctly. I love them so much that I would eat them anywhere. It is to me the classic American Burger and should be celebrate. After ordering, I had no idea what i was in for so when I saw the server slap down to the two Fresh Patties, my eyeballs almost popped out of my skull. For $3.00 I got two freshly made, piping hot, juicy Sliders with Grilled Onions on small squishy Buns. It’s a good thing I don’t live closer because this little neighborhood gem would easily be on my local eating route, especially after a few brewski’s at the local pub.

White Burger in Greenpoint, Brooklyn is properly making Sliders for $1.50 and you need to try them.
